My mum and sister are here for Easter. Went to a cafe today for coffee, ordered and waited. Twenty minutes later, nothing. The waitress then came out with someone else's order, looked around, whoever had ordered it had obviously also got fed up with waiting and left. She didn't acknowledge my mum's signal and disappeared. Then she turned up with an empty tray so my mum and sister gave up and left as well.
The place wasn't at all crowded - the waitress just disappeared completely for 20 minutes. |

The scenario Sgt. B. describes happens here in the Netherlands too. Not everywhere, but it's not uncommon, either. We sometimes wonder if we're invisible... |

Glenlivet...thanks. i bet they just try to pass me off... I can give you names and email addresses of ppl in Tymbark that I was dealing with if you need it. I have not heard anything since their email to me on April 3.
oh ya....no shyt about the pricing.... in Carrefour- i spotted a 1ltr of Caprio apple juice was 1.99. a 2 ltr was 4.20. WTF?? don't these companies get it??
Its amazing how expensive things like Coke and Pepsi are compared to USA/Canada pricing. I've just checked a popular Canadian supermarket and they have 24x355ml cans of Coke for 8CAD or .33cents each. Good luck buying a 24 of cans here in PL. I have a Makro/Selgros card...and it's not possible.
oh and YTF does Coke and Pepsi taste so different here :/
ahhh what i would do for a Barqs today why no rootbeer over here??
and WTF is the insane price of "crisps/potato chips" about??
but i do like the cheapness of smoked salmon!!....now if i could only find bagels in my city |

Poland is still a relatively"new player" to the brand name snack and junk food buisness.Coke/pepsi/brand crisps etc are still quite expensive compared to the western countries. This is probably a good thing, as it prevents people from buying that stuff too often.
You're not going to find the 1.50zl, 2 litre bottles of Coca Cola and Pepsi, that you regularly find at supermarkets in Canada. In Poland,if you find a bottle for 4.30zl,mass hysteria is created and it's advertised heavily and sold alongside its twin bottle brother in a 2-pack for 8.60zlish.
This situation will probably change in 10-15 years, but for now, these are still "luxury" junk food products and priced to reflect that. The Poles love their fizzy drinks though;more than any other nationality I've ever encountered.
Try having a nacho and salsa night at home with all the trimmings. You'll have to shell out over 35-40zl for enough for two people. |

i still haven't forgiven poland for this.
i was a big soda drinker in the states, especially Mt. Dew. Not 5 a day, but rarely would a day pass where I wouldn't have a soda. In poland, mt. dew is not even drinkable. it's flat out NOT mt. dew......i don't know what it is.
Coke/Pepsi, also awful. my first Coke in Poland, i couldn't even finish the glass. |

In Asia, they over-sweeten their cola so it tastes awful.
In Poland, the brand name soft drinks seem to be under-carbonated.Maybe that's why they taste different.
I never buy the 2 litre bottles of soda here as they will go flat in two days max.In Canada,I could keep a 2 litre for weeks in the fridge, and it always kept its carbonation, even after having been opened multiple times.
Not really important in the grand scheme of things, just an observation on my part. |

They under carbonate the soda here for a reason. If it goes flat in 2 days, you have 2 days to drink it, then you have to go buy another 2 litre every 2 days or so. |

This is typical pricing tactics here in Poland - in Auchan, we buy one litre cartons of juice - per litre it's cheaper then 2 litres. A 250g packet of cereal, 2 of them are cheaper then 500g, one litre olive oil, cheaper than two litres per litre etc etc. It just means you have a whacking great set of shopping bags when you pass through the checkout. |
Carrefour used to do the same thing. A six pack of Corona cost 15% more than just buying six bottles and a box of 12 packets of cat food cost 10% more than three packs each with four packets of cat food. I wrote about it one week in the newspaper and mysteriously the prices changed. |

Oh, and they gotta make the language easier. Getting rid of some of those useless case endings would be a good start.

That has to be the most ridiculous thing I've heard in years. Well, how about making all languages easier then? Only for a bunch of English speakers who are unable to learn a foreign language.
Btw, may I just ask you (and I mean all the whiners on this forum): why are you here in the first place? Are you being kept in Poland against your will? Because if not, then at least have the decency to respect the country and the people that are paying your bread and butter. And if that's not what you're capable of doing, then why don't you just do everyone a favour and move on? |

Oi, moaning on your first post is not permitted. To become an accredited moaner your first couple of posts must be of a positive or work related nature, then and only then you can start to moan.
Now, please edit the above post to say something nice about the weather and then post several times about the fact Polish women are lovely and don't wear many clothes and then start to bitch.
I shall have to infract you if thou shalt continue to spread thy bitterness wihout praising Poland beforehand. And anyhoo, winding up Dynow is strictly my domain. |

I didn't know there were rules to this game, apart from having to bitch about Poland and Poles
As to the women, I might not be the best person to sing their praises, being a woman myself. And when it comes to the men, well, I'm not willing to fall into the trap of spreading bitterness here The weather, however, is lovely indeed. |

That's much better. Being a lass should add an extra dimension to the board and that's always a welcome addition.
In order to become a fully fledged moaner of the board (MOTB - please feel free to use this acronym - once qualified - much in the same way you use MBA, Msc etc) you must tell us about the following on the relevant threads:
That you aren't earning enough/saving enough and what can be done about this.
Obviously, your comments to the "are the birds getting fatter" thread are greatly welcomed.
Discussion about beer also needs some spicing up, although under no circumstances can you extol the virtues of Redds.
Discussion about the ugliness of Polish men is welcomed as it makes us fatty ex-pats feel better.
Please look at the first 3 pages of the forum and feel free to dredge up any forgotten-about threads that may be of interest to you.
Correction of fellow posters bad English usage or grammar is permitted but seen as bad form (although funny to everyone else who is not being criticised).
Finally, you may bitch.
Enjoy your stay |

Really? That old gag??? "Love it or leave it"???
Let's get something straight: I really like my home country, but I'll also be the first person to say our health care system is a$$ backwards, George Bush was not only bad but embarrassing.......and oh yeah, Americans are fat. Yada yada yada.....
Now I live here. Poland. I see things for face value, and one of them being a strong opinion regarding the Polish language. I've given my supporting reasons for this on another and more appropriate thread, but now that you've so politely set the table, I'd be more than obliged to turn it and maybe shed some light on "the most ridiculous thing you've heard in years."
If I may ask:
Are you Polish?
If not, how long have you been here?
What do you do in Poland for work? |
