I hope we can keep lol'ing

Shouldn't that be "L'ingOL"? Or is the acronym itself considered a verb making "LOL'ing" correct?

Nitpickers need to know.

Really?

Since it's universally know that LOL actually stands, entirely, for, Laughing Out Loud, there is no need to add any additional 'ing' of other suffix to the abbreviation. Otherwise, it would be Laughinging Out Loud. It takes little I.Q. to figure that out.

That being said, LOL is not technically an acronym as it is pronounced, L-O-L (each individual letter), not Lol, being read as a single 3-letter word. Just like D.N.A. is not an acronym, nor is P.R.C. SCUBA on the other hand is an acronym, read as a word; so is Nabisco (the National Biscuit Company that makes snack foods, including chocolate chip cookies found in most supermarkets).

I hate when people try to be smart-asses.

As promised I have an update.

The meeting between foreign firms and govt took place last Friday as stated.

It transpires that the new law was enacted without much thought (we all knew that) and was intended to atone for a loophole that allows foreign companies to pay their staff in China in their home countries (in many cases thus avoiding the employee paying tax as they are considered non or not ordinarily resident) and paying them a peppercorn salary in China. This arrangement can continue for five years. The Chinese not unnaturally see this as inequitable - although why they haven't taken steps to close it is beyond me - and this is knee-jerk stuff. Sadly, ESL teachers are in danger of being penalised.

However, all is not lost and there may yet be a major policy change because the lawmakers have said they cannot enforce the tax because of the unemployment benefit and visa revocation implications when out of a job. Ergo, they are now worried that they will unwittingly (if they proceed) open themselves up to enormous amounts of African, Indian etc workers who quite rightly claim their entitlement after paying in.

The only place the tax is being deducted is Beijing and currently legislators are I believe back at the drawing board. No questions please as I am simply relaying from a friend in Shanghai and all I know is what I am posting. If I hear anything further of course I will share.

Fingers crossed.

I wonder why they would be worried about Indians and Africans collecting unemployment. As opposed to, say, Americans and Australians.

The post with words of a friend in Shanghai is more than enlightening. No matter what, the Beijing policy is ridiculous given the circumstances. It only demonstrates who runs the system and how. Moreover, it well indicates the eagerness to impose on foreigners in the country. Whatever happens many in-house guests feel the draft as well as the necessity to prepare for worse.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LOL

Here is a link to how the abbreviation/acronym is commonly used. Some people say L-O-L and some people read it lol (lul).

Not sure what this has to do with the social insurance tax.

To something on topic here. I think that Africans and Indians would be more willing to fight for there benefits than their western counterparts. Their communities are much closer here, which means they would be able to stick around, even if it meant hiding out, while pressing the government to pay up.

Many Westerners would scape it up as a lose and head home.

Just an opinion.

On the topic and opinion from above, it would appear that that is probably what Beijing is attempting to accomplish. Wink

It's sad that nobody has any attention span and able to stick to a topic.

In addition, there is a legal definition difference between foreign workers and foreign experts and foreign teachers in China.

Also, the law was not applied to the nation - it is initially designed as a Beijing locality process.

It is, theoretically to be applied to companies and businesses, not governmental institutions and the like.

Why is it so difficult for people to actually read the proposed law documents (provided nation-wide in English) before spouting off about it?

It's not as applicable to the common foreign expert of foreign teacher in China as everyone is crying about. In the end, it's more hilarious that this desperation to keep that extra 5% tax, amounting to a few hundred RMB is so critical in your survival. Clearly China is an issue for you. Why not go back home and earn money there instead of taking a stand to grab hold of a few dozen DOLLARS? What kind of desperation and running-away-from-something does that show?

hmmmmm
