Haha, drifter you lucky sob. My one preference was that I was close to the Pacific Ocean. Well, I guess Atsugi is pretty close... |

Late or not coming at all! You've been warned!
Nagoya is much better than its reputation, though. Lived here for over two years and, while the city itself is not that great, there are lots of great places nearby that only take an hour or two by train, such as Takayama, Kyoto, Osaka, Nara, Ise, etc.
Try to look around for alternatives if possible.
This is the company's graph...which looks exactly like Enron's 2 weeks before the feces hit the proverbial fan. I'm predicting the same for Nova. So, look around, bring plenty of cash, take the advance, maybe even take the apartment (you might get evicted soon, though) and get a different job ASAP.
Good luck!

I live in Nagoya, which not a bad place at all. Plenty of gaijin, a few million natives, and (as mentioned) a short train ride to a lot of cool places. The late payday doesn't really affect me but a friend was supposed to pay a downpayment on an apt this afternoon... I am sticking it out, but I know there are some unhappy kids around. I still have plenty of students to teach, but I don't know if that translates to much new revenue.. nothing like an oppurtunity/crisis situation to get the blood pumping |

Yeah, I got the a call this morning from the Toronto office, and it's definately Defcon 1 over there (or at least 2). They basically said what's been said in the news, and asked if I wanted to proceed, delay or cancel.
Seeing as how I have a Ticket already paid and all my stuff packed, I might as well hit it. The Visa is good for a year and I'm ready for rain. I might just go for that advance (if it's even available anymore, lol), use it to buy a ticket home if I have to.
It's an imperfect situation, but it's the one I got. Anyone else here get called and decieded what they want to do? |

| My ticket was supposed be booked today, leaving on Sept 25th. I decided to cancel. I'm going to delay and see if things get better. This sucks, I was so excited! Can I use my Visa with another company? I thought it could be done but I heard that Nova could revoke it, as they helped me get it. |

yep, but you might have to come here first and then jump ship.

| Your visa is your own, and Nova can't do anything to it. If you already have it, then you are legal to work in Japan for the next year. |

| I spoke to AEON today, and a lady explained to me that because Nova had sponsored me, they would have to re-start the visa application process if I was to work for them (she said that some of the smaller english schools will overlook where the sponsorship came from, but they don't). I'm so confused. At this point I have post phoned my departure date to October 16th. I feel as though that's super sketchy though! Quite the pickle. Is anyone else in the same boat? |

Not sure, but being a bigger company they might fall under requirements smaller companies don't. I'm just worried that when I get to Japan that they won't stamp my Visa because it says Nova on it I've confirmed with head office I'm gonna go, but I'm firing off resumes like a roman candle. I can probably wing it for month on my funds, so hopefully someone will bite, or another company will buyout Nova for laughs. Things are looking rough, but they could be worse. I could be the former Japanese Prime Minster right now, poor guy all layed up from stress and whatnot |

once you're in japan, the visa is yours to keep. it may be a different story if you're in the process of applying for it.
if you're looking for more info on the current nova situation, try gaijinpot. letsjapan was a better source of info (with far less bickering), but unfortunately their server has crashed because of all the extra traffic.
no, having lots of students to teach doesn't translate into money for nova. nova students pay for 3 year packages of points. the students you are teaching now would have paid for their lessons up to 3 years ago. nova has already spent that money. |

| AEON only recruits from abroad as far as I know, maybe that's why. I think you can find work with a smaller outfit quite easily. |

I was recently rejected by NOVA, and accepted by ECC (to my understanding, ECC is much more difficult to get into while NOVA hires almost anyone).
Could this fiscal trouble be the reason why? I really thought I nailed the interview, I knew everything to expect, was confident, energetic, and informed. It was definitely a "huh?" moment when I was rejected. |

I've heard that they've picked up recruiting since the trouble started. This doesn't exactly explain your situation, but I wouldn't worry too much about it if I were you. |

Very true, but I'm hoping somebody can provide some additional information.
In my situation, I left Nova last year in August, and when I renewed my visa in January, immigration gave me some problems because I never changed my sponsorship. I was friendly, and the lady gave me a pass, but I'm wondering if you're required to notify immigration when you change jobs, or if the lady was just going off of Article 1055, Section 25769-0, paragraph 75.
Not a real law, but gosh it's good to be drinking American beer again. |
