You hear that a lot doncha, johnslat? Spanglish. I'd never heard it in the classroom until I started teaching in DF; apparently it's a verbatim translation. |
Yes, same here in French!
J'ai 30 ans and I have 30 years. They don't think it's a big deal until I tell them je suis 30 ans (to be instead of to have) and they say it sounds stupid. Well, how do you think it sounds in English then? |

Okay, now that I know what it's NOT........
I'm assuming it's something like Yankee except that it's more of a blanket term for all people that don't look local. |

A kinder, gentler version of "wog" - used more often, of course, with the non-woggish looking ones .

Dear johntpartee.
One doesn't look up wogs; one looks down on them. And they begin at Calais.

How is the weather? So-so
How was your week? So-so
How are you today? So-so
Do you like Chocolate? So-so
Did you like the movie? It is So-so
Problem is, to me "So - so" says there is more to the story. I want to know why so-so...
Maybe I am just a mean teacher, but to me nothing invites follow up questions more than so-so, I really can't let it slide...
And my students always look shocked and blink at me in confusion when I ask the follow up, like: "whoa, whoa... I have to... say more?"
Even when I have told them for the hundredth time, yes I expect more, (you know I expect more,) and I will continue to expect more, until you either:
A. don't fall into
or B. pay attention and learn to talk your way out of
... the so-so trap.
These are my higher level students... not the ones where I flash the card and say "repeat".
I am sure though, this is just my neurosis, and I should just let it go.
In fact, I am sure I should consider myself lucky they speak at all... some of them really don't . |
