It all comes down to money. In the EFL world $3,000 for a reasonable number of hours per week (20, maybe) is what swings people in the direction of KSA. Thanks to the KSA government's drive to 'educate' they are now hiring EFL teachers by the thousands in PYP programs.

Actually, the contracting companies and not the Saudi government are doing all the hiring to supplement those PYP staffing needs. Otherwise, you'd see a lot more direct-hire opportunities with salaries quite above that $3000.

Oman sounds like a better bet in terms of peace of mind; Saudi for the bank balance. Does Oman still only recruit English degree holders?

If TEFL positions in Oman also pay around $3000/mo, then it would seem to be a tie between KSA and Oman for those motivated by money. But as you've noted, Oman seems to be more specific about which degree majors they'll accept.

Yeah, I know that. I'm in a much better paid + benefits, direct hire job. Also where I am, since 2012, the direct hire salaries have been going DOWN. If I started now, I'd get 4,500 LESS than when I arrived in 2010. But my point is that the recruiters will pay around 12,000 SR and will likely never go up.

No, my Bachelors is in Psychology and my Masters is in Educational Technology and I've got a Ministry contract.

Sure, but previously in this thread, you posted that you're a direct hire with the MoHE teaching 7.5 hours a week while being responsible for teacher training as well. Plus, this isn't your first teaching job in Oman. (By the way, a Masters in Ed Tech could certainly be considered relevant.) What about the situation for the average applicant contemplating Oman for the first time---someone who isn't, in a sense, "grandfathered in" yet see TEFL postings from recruiters requiring a related degree?

For most I would suggest the softer route of applying through an agent and then seeing if a direct hire chance came along after a year. However the direct hire positions do come with their own problems as I've siad before.

This may be true with most recruiters, but others, surprisingly, provide yearly pay increases that may average above the same as direct-hire jobs. Not sure how they do this, but it happens. I have a friend working with a recruiter/contractor who has never received less than a 7% annual increase over a 4 year period. Wish I could expect as much. My direct hire job provides a little over half this.
