With an entry-level position at a place like PNU, you'd probably be making around $3-4K/month. Since you are frugal, you can expect to save as much as 90% of that, tax free.
PS. I should add that as a single woman in Saudi, with a little bit of networking you will have all sorts of social opportunities in the expat community simply due to the dearth of western women there, which would make your time there much more enjoyable than you might assume. |
I suggest first focusing on direct-hire situations such as Prince Sultan University (Riyadh) and King Abdulaziz University (Jeddah)---both are currently hiring. Although Princess Noura Uni has some direct-hire opportunities, it relies heavily on contracting companies for most of the staffing needs, which equates to a lower salary and average benefits and very likely, shared housing. Plus, you really want to think twice about working for EdEx, SBC, or ICEAT, the major contracting companies supplying teachers at PNU.
In terms of making new female friends, I'm not sure why posters (usually males) like to give advice about meeting other western women for social opportunities. My circle of friends ended up looking like the United Nations---most were from India, Pakistan, Africa, and other Arab countries with quite a few Saudi women included. The experience made my stay in the Kingdom a lot more colorful and culturally enlightened. |

Of course she is. And if she works hard, there will likely come more opportunities in overtime. Cost of living is cheap, and her housing is paid. Three years could be easy, and less is very possible. |

| Health Care. The "Socialised Medicine" that is anathema to free-born Murkans ! |
It's more universal now in the US than it was before, witht he Affordable Health Care Act that Obama pushed through. Furthermore, Medicare (65 and older, which I am drawing near), is a government health insurance coverage with premiums $110-120 or so a month. This was part of FD Roosevelt's New Deal, and it won't go away soon. The "senior" voters are a powerful enough lobby. |

DB65 and Angry Brit, thanks much for the encouragement- what you describe is exactly my hope, even on $3000 a month.
Nomad and VS, I really appreciate the tips as well. I havn't checked out Prince Sultan yet and I def will now.
I have to say, I'm rather at a loss as to how someone gets hired at PNU, even with a sketchy contractor. Case in point: 2 weeks ago, just for kicks, I responded to an ad posted on Dave's with [insert name of less-common company] because it was for PNU specifically. However, they forwarded my app to [insert name of infamous company] for a completely different job. No word from original company on PNU.
I've also gotten advice to try Aukland and Teach Away, but Aukland seems to not be recruiting for PNU anymore, and I can find no info from Teach Away about PNU. I've emailed them and am waiting to hear back.
Last weekend I went on PNU's own site and submitted my materials through their basic employment form, so hopefully something may come of that. I've also sent a fair number of emails.
Regardless, I'll keep checking into other options. I'll look into places like the UAE as well, though that looks like a better option for the future. I'd love to teach Business English in a place like Dubai. |

The recruiters in Saudi are famous for 'bait and switch' - and even do it AFTER you arrive and they have you captive.
Teachaway seems to recruit for schools in the Gulf, not for universities. If it isn't listed on their website, they aren't recruiting for them. They do have a decent reputation for their contract in the UAE. They will follow their posted job requirements... so if it asks for US school teaching certification, it will be required.
