Dear John
I think there is a difference between "People of the Book" and "Idolaters/Polytheism" and the context in which each term is used:
In Islam, hirk (Arabic: شرك) is the major sin of idolatry or polytheism. Islam strongly prohibits all form of idolatry. It refers to the deification of anyone or anything other than the singular God.[19] Shirk is also associating partners with him, giving his characteristics to others beside him, or not believing in his characteristics.[19][20]
Within Islam, hirk is an unforgivable crime; God may forgive any sin except for committing hirk.[19][21] It is the vice that is opposed to the virtue of tawhid, literally "declaring [that which is] one", often translated into the English term monotheism
[The word hirk comes from the Arabic root -R-K (ش ر ك), with the general meaning of "to share".[22] In the context of the Qur'an, the particular sense of "sharing as an equal partner" is usually understood, so that polytheism is "attributing a partner to Allah". In the Qur'an, hirk and the related word (plural Stem IV active participle) murikūn (مشركون) "those who commit shirk and plot against Islam" often clearly refers to the enemies of Islam (as in verse 9.115) but sometimes it also refers to erring Muslims./i]

People of the Book:
[i]There are many statements in the Qur'an telling that People of The Book are people who have the book of Allah but do not practice.3:110 Ye are the best of peoples, evolved for mankind, enjoining what is right, forbidding what is wrong, and believing in Allah. If only the People of the Book had faith, it were best for them: among them are momin, but most of them are perverted transgressors. 3:113 Not all of them are alike: Of the People of the Book are a portion that stand (For the right): They rehearse the Signs of Allah all night long, and they prostrate themselves in adoration. 3:199 And there are, certainly, among the People of the Book, those who believe in Allah, in the revelation to you, and in the revelation to them, bowing in humility to Allah: They will not sell the Signs of Allah for a miserable gain! For them is a reward with their Lord, and Allah is swift in account. Ahl mean family, and Ahlalkitab means Family of Book.Among Ahlalkitab are momin 3:110. Throughout Islamic history, Muslims have used these ayah (verses) to justify a variety of positions towards non-Muslims. The Qur'an also encourages neutral position toward all non-Muslims.[13]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/People_of_the_Book#In_the_Qur.27an |

Well, I do not think Muslims will go against the Qur'an, especially concerning why non-Muslims are banned to visit Makkah, and this is mentioned in the Qur’an as follows:
"Oh you who believe! Truly the idolaters are unclean; so let them not, after this year, approach the Sacred Mosque...." [9:28]
There are some Islamic scholars who would permit exceptions to this general rule, for trade purposes or for people who are under treaty permission. There is also some debate about the exact area and borders of the restricted area(s).

I understand Paris Hilton opened a shop there. Do you know if her shop is within the "restricted area" or in the area being debated? |

Her shop is located at Mecca Mall which is inside the Harram border, and the store is the 5th in the Magic Kingdom.
Makkah Mall, which opened in 2011 with 255 shops, many of them global chains, selling everything from jewelery to electronics, women's fashion to sportswear. It even has a branch of the lingerie chain La Senza.

Sheikh Adnan Baharith, a conservative cleric who preaches in Mecca, said: ''It is unnecessary to have her shop here because we do not need it.
''If it was in our hands we would have closed all of her shops in Saudi.''
Of course, Sheikh Adnan cannot close her shop because the Malls in Makkah belong to some of the top Emirs. |
