beet = beer = typo

Some typos can be overlooked except in this case when it is a critical word that the story hinges on. I should have used the same advice that I always give my students:

Careful editing produces better writing.

I will endeavor to proof read a little better here on the forum. Gomen.

Good catch The Fifth Column. I'm just glad the meaning wasn't lost.

Speaking of the Kirin Brewery -- How about Kirin City? -- that urban mock hofbrau haus and home to the $4 little half glass of foam in three or four varieties? The pizza isn't bad, though.

Regards,

Asahi Black is my favorite typ'o Japanese beer... Razz

The Fifth Column -- No pun intended I'm sure. Asahi Black is a good beer. Beets = beats many of the others. In my opinion most type 'o beers/Biru beats hopushu in flavor. The price does make it more drinkable, however, if I am on a budget, I will opt for lemon sochu or one cup ozeki in a pinch.

Does anywhere have happoshu on tap?

No one told me happoshu wasnt proper beer for about 6 months, and as it was cheap it was pretty much solely what I drank.

You thought that was beer? You must have really thought that Japanese brewing sucks, like more than it actually does.

I do agree with the earlier post that Suntory's Rich Malt is drinkable. I quite prefer it to Asahi Super Dry, actually. Perhaps this has more to do with perceived value than anything else, though. That Asahi Clear (name?) in the yellow can is pretty vile, though, IMHO.

Right now I'm drinking asahi dry premium (it says super dry above that on the label).

A real beer (not happoshu), and at 6%, some extra kick. Doesn't have the oily taste that I associate with plain old super dry.

The can is all gold. Maybe 6300 or so for a case of the 500ml size.

There's another, suntory premium malts, but you need to get the エール beer version in the almost all blue can. This seems to be not as available tho.

Abbey beer is at OK and Olympic. It is cheaper than Japanese beer.
It is made in northern France, and is popular with English people.

I have found Martin`s, which is from Belgian, and only costs 160 yen, which seems like a bargain compared to Japanese beer.

I like Yamaya. They have a better selection of beer. Today I bought Belhaven, which is from Scotland. They had Scottish Ale and Best, as well as their Ale.
What else did I see? Wychwood, from Cambridgeshire. I have never tried it.
Prince Charles likes this brewery.

I bought London Pride, from Fuller's, the last brewery still operating within London.

I developed a taste for their ales back when I lived in Cambridgeshire. Here in Japan, my wife has bought it for me as a Christmas / Birthday treat a few times.

I love the slogan for their Hobgoblin ale:

What's the matter, lager boy? Scared you might taste something?

Oh, which kind did you like?
It is kind of expensive.

I think in Tokyo it is on tap, but I forget the bar, whether in Ebisu, Shibuya or Ueno. What the Dickens or Aldgate, maybe.

Yamaya used to sell John Smith's.
I have bought Shepherd Neame in Kawasaki for less than 200 yen, which is a bargain. Usually Spitfire would be over 500 yen.

I like the Abbey beer too, though the liquor store near me doesn't carry it anymore. Yamaya's is good for whiskey and wine too. Their imported beer selection is good, but foreign beer here tends to be pricy.

Another good idea is to buy Kirin's 'Munich' white, which is a decent beer and cheaper than regular Kirin.

Was excited about Boddington's at Olympic supermarket, but it is a bit crap after all.

Bought a can of Tokyo Black though, and it is fantastic. Im going to buy more now

I hear the tax on happoushu and daisan beer will soon increase by around ¥20-¥30 per can. Not too pleased to hear this. Does anyone know when this is slated to begin?

No, and then the tax on beer will go down but do not know when.
It is an easy way to get money.
Yet cigarettes are not touched. I guess it is just in the hands of lobbyists.

Good. They need to just slightly lower beer tax. They spend too much effort on Happoshu which IMHO makes beer suffer here
