The way I had it was that a pre-med check is entirely optional. (And I'm headed to Huangdao district of Qingdao, Shandong Province.)
Holy lord though, a med check in the US for the things they want is expensive, even with insurance. The ideal is to do it in China (much less expensive) but to clear yourself ahead of time so you're not deported for foreseeable medical reasons (make sure you don't have HIV, for instance). |

| I have my Z visa in hand; so, it's clear a medical exam is not required in order to obtain the visa. Now, in order to get the residency permit once you get to China, I understand a medical exam (that you can get in China) is required and the residency permit applied for within 30 days after arriving. |

Yeah - I agree with Bud, whether a medical check is needed in order to obtain the Z visa definitely depends on the embassy/consulate you're applying through. In your case you were lucky - it seems more Chinese embassies and consulates require applicants to *have* a medical check done in order to process the Z visa than not.
When it comes to Chinese bureaucracy the process of doing anything is about as clear as a fetid, green swamp full of diarrhea, mosquito larvae and the burn unit at The People's Hospital # 8's freshly dumped used bandages. Alas - but congrats on the easier visa process at your end. |

Chinese bureaucracy:
As clear as mud? Yes.
As clear as a fetid, green swamp full of diarrhea? Perhaps.
As clear as a fetid, green swamp full of diarrhea, mosquito larvae and the burn unit at The People's Hospital # 8's freshly dumped used bandages? Um?...no...I do not think I would ever describe it this way.
Inconsistent, frustrating, infuriating? Yes.
Sick and kind of disturbing? No. |

Okay, then, it's clear it wasn't required by the Chinese Consulate in New York City. |
