Hello

I think some JET jobs give very cheap apartments to rent, but that's hit and miss.

You mean the quality of the apartments or just the fact that not everyone gets subsidised housing?

I meant that sometimes you don't get a subsidised apartment, but I'm sure the quality also varies considerably, in size and quality.

Thanks, I thought that was what you meant (but then again as you both mention could apply to the two things). I read somewhere that in Kyoto there are no subsidised apartments with the JET programme. Not sure if that's definitely true for all JETs.

I was actually looking on Youtube before with JET teachers giving you a guided tour of their apartment and I was surprised they were so big for one person apartments. Of course, I realise that will depend on city/area and so on.

What I don't understand about the JET programme is why the salary isn't higher for Tokyo? Shouldn't they have an exception for Tokyo in that your salary is slightly higher to reflect higher living costs?

Are there even JETs in Tokyo anymore? Most of the big cities can get ALTs from dispatch companies these days I hear. There are so many gaijin who want to work and live in Tokyo, they could probably even pay less. Or even just toss all the applicants in a pit and let them fight to the death for that Tokyo position.
"Every situation is different." When I was with the program, the JETs in a nearby big city got a higher salary than us small town JETs stationed outside city limits. Not much, like 10000 a month or something. Why? Higher cost of living? The big city BOE had the money to throw around? No one really knew.

This is changing. Why? In preparation for 2020. Have a look at this

Pre-2014: 5 JETs
2014: 100 JETs
2015: 200 JETs

Haha, that sounds right. Some seem desperate just to go to Tokyo and would gladly accept the salary JET offers, but in fairness vs. cost of living I think it should be higher.

That's interesting. I didn't know that!

Or I could wait, and hope I get into JET. The panel of interviewers was impossible to read - the most emotion I got out of them was a Japanese woman who said nothing and just nodded and wrote things down after I answered questions. I already have 4 years experience teaching in Asia though, and I feel like I answered every question satisfactorily, though perhaps not perfectly.

Can anyone offer me any advice on making this decision? What would you do in this situation?

Oooo, now this is a difficult position to be in: I think you interviewed with me. Confused

Glad to know we weren't readable. You have no idea how hard it is not to laugh out loud at some people. Very Happy
