No, no, no...

the REAL reason the e-portfolio works so well is that they are then unsupervised and can improve their writing by asking Uncle Abdullah to 'help' them.

In my neck of the woods, legend has it, there is some 'tutor' from South Asia who offers to 'help' students with their assignments for a set fee. He apparently has been around for years and I suspect just about all the students in my college have his number on speed dial. Indeed, many of my colleagues claim they have got to the stage where they can spot his individual writing style a mile away Rolling Eyes.

We once had a student turn in a 're-written' e-portfolio English submission in French. it was quite interesting. Laughing

the e portfolio works well when after they turn in the assignment you ask them to verbally explain anything you think is not written by them. getting saudis not to cheat is a step by step process. one must be patient. its fool proof with due diligence Wink

you just illustrated why it doesn't work well because of the extra workload involved in following up the many pieces of work that are plagiarised or done by a friend/classmate/uncle/Asian guy who takes payment/Google Translate. This workload falls on the teacher and other admin staff who have to a) be extra vigilant with any work done without supervision and b) chase, often multiple times, students to resubmit.

Sure you can ask them to explain it (I had one student who somehow failed to paraphrase the word haemophiliac which had somehow crept in), but as soon as you prove that it isn't their work, you're back at square one. Sometimes the second, third, fourth, etc pieces of work are also useless. Where do you go then with a student who obviously cannot do the task you've set and is doing their best to just tick a box rather than study to improve?

In a previous workplace in Saudi, I was in charge of this process for hundreds of students at a time and whereas it was designed to place the burden of work on students, a small minority instead placed a huge burden on admin staff to get the process to actually work. It's now being phased out there as a result.

Yes, sicklyman it takes more work. This saudi where cheating is helping. We are up against a society that encourages copy and paste. Not for the faint at heart. The extra challenge perhaps is a necessary burden to make the big bucks! Just today I got some students see paraphrasing in action by fellow students. Some guys just don't get it . Persistence pays

Cheating has nothing to do with teaching technique. It has to do with what their customs tells them is OK. Every once in a while you get some students who feel its wrong because they identify with Western values. In Abha I had classes where every single person was focusing on another's paper. I used to get pretty angry and stern over it. The result? I was removed.

Cheating also has to do with another dishonest factor. The failure of the schools (whose whole purpose is to rake in cash, unlike in the school systems in the West) to group students into classes according to skill and provide appropriate teaching materials.

Another nice thing that you see often is grouping excellent students all in the same class room of course for a few dollars more of bribe money. While the not so smart students never get the advantage of peer teaching and example.
