So how would singles navigate the dating scene living on campus? Best to date someone with their own place in Dubai and stay there?

Seriously? Cohabitation is illegal. They're adults and likely follow the rules of the host country and university.

One is discreet. It is not that difficult.

So you are suggesting that one has to put their dating life on hold while working for this university? The prying eyes say: "Oh, I have noticed lately you have only been staying at your lousy little 1-bedroom on-campus apartment 3 nights a week." To which I reply, "And your point?"

Not really. I'm not accountable for other adults' personal decisions. Either you follow the rules or take your chances. Human nature. This is a no-brainer -- be smart about it. You may be discreet, but all it takes is a pissed-off, revengeful coworker you've confided in or a nosy neighbor and...

Hopefully this won't turn into another pointless "dating" thread. Rolling Eyes

But it can be done discreetly and on occasion, especially off campus. It's definitely inconvenient, but where there's a will there's a way. Life doesn't have to stop just because one lives on campus in Sharjah does it?

I wouldn't say it's useless because one hopefully goes to a place like the UAE not just to work, but to be able to stay awhile. For those still single and looking to mingle, dating is obviously going to factor in somewhere.

I've lived on a campus in the Middle East (in Kuwait and Oman). It was basically a free for all. A number of teachers were living together - unmarried, but they also had the pretense of two residences. Thus... discreet.

In the Emirates, there is plenty of dating and Westerners tend to be ignored... as long as they are not stupid with public displays of affection. I look at it as a Victorian-style culture. Publicly play by the cultural rules and do as you wish inside your flat.

That said, if you make enemies, it can be used against you if you try long term co-habitation in these countries. But it tends to be enforced in a racist manner... ie the darker the skin of one or more of the members of a couple, the more likely one can get into trouble with the law in this area.

Thanks for that VS. It's basically a risk that most tend to get away with, as long as one is discreet, especially with any long-term arrangements.

It would also be interesting to hear from someone at AUS on this point just to get their take on it there.
