creeper1,

Best of luck to you in whatever you decide. I believe you've had a pretty good ride in Our China, no?

The worlds biggest market? What about other countries? What about Korea, Japan, UAE, Saudi Arabia? There is a lot of work in those countries too. I never knew Beijing was polluted until I came to Asia. Never heard it at all. It isn't anything to write home about the TEFL salaries in China is it? University positions paying 5000-12000 a month for example. Language schools paying 12000-18000 per month? Is that lots and lots of money? NO

Well, actually, we need to back this train up and look at the VERY first question that must be asked: what do you, the applicant, bring to the table; what experience(s) and qualifications do YOU have and can offer to any potential employer?

Amen to this.

Chopin, here's a few examples of what can be made if you get a teaching licence and get to work in an international school. I'm not just pulling figures out of my ass, they come from the salary scales of international schools:

Western Academy Beijing - http://www.wab.edu/join/employment/teacher-compensation-benefits: "The starting annual gross salary ranges from RMB 339,732"

Nanjing International School - http://www.nischina.org/uploaded/files/20162018_Overseas_Hire.pdf. Salary scale shows a NET starting salary of 326,000RMB per year.

Shanghai City International School - https://www.google.com/search?q=international+school+china+salary&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&client=firefox-b#q=shanghai+scis+salary: Entry-level salary offers for qualified classroom teachers range from US$38,000 to US$54,000. That's a net salary, not gross.

All three of those places also offer large housing allowances or have housing provided for free. For example SCIS offers 110,000RMB a year for housing - you could surely save out of that if you lived in a cheaper area.

To make a comparison, the average salary in the UK is £26,500. After tax, that becomes £20,400. Converted to RMB, that's 180,000RMB a year. Maybe that entry level job paying 15,000RMB a month isn't so bad after all, given the UK average is an average, and entry level wages will be lower than the average. And the UK is one of the most expensive places to live in the world - not really an accusation you could level at most of China.
