There is no next destination. It's over. Time to retrain/leave the industry. Quick example. In my job they are replacing people like me with people from places like Uzbekistan via 3rd parties and paying them less than half of what I make. I'm in oil and gas but the unis out here will be full of that lot in a year or 2.

That's the future.

It feels like you've been about to leave teaching for ages now. When you finally do get round to it, are you still going to come back on here at regular intervals and tell us all how much money you used to make?

For a short historical period there were opportunities for English teachers to earn well in KSA. That lasted from circa 1975 to 2015. 40 years. that anomaly is now coming to an end. I rejoice that for some of that time I took advantage of the cards dealt to me. Now the game is over.

I'm going home. I plan to teach 2 lessons a day ie part-time. I've got everything I set out to get.
If you don't like people posting facts, then that's your problem.
When I leave these parts I will have no interest in posting on the Middle East forums.
Over the years I've helped many people on here with contacts and the like. There were high salaries to be had in ESP oil and gas. Some better than others of course. That era is now over.
Sounds like the green-eyed monster to me. Get over it.

Actually I'm already semi-retired with a lot more in assets than you (I seem to remember you boasting about that on here as well) And I didn't have to pimp myself out to an evil regime to achieve it. Laughing

You have no idea what assets I have. I came into an awful lot of money last year.

Furthermore, which evil regime are you talking about? The one that invades countries resulting in 100,000s of deaths I take it?

An excellent summary: we have been fortunate to have benefited from it while it lasted. It wasn't always easy, but on balance, I'm glad I did it.

Some people will always have more money/assets than others, but if you have enough to live a comfortable, modest life, you are in a better position than most.

Noone is doubting that, as I remember, you were helpful to me via PM.

But why sound so boastful or the need to prove anything? There is no need as you have done what you set out to achieve, and have assets to retire before you turn 50, then more power due you. Why care what others think, just enjoy your retirement, and let the naysayers be, ESL is full of 'em, always has been, always will be.

Amen. I guess the point that my self and Scot47 are making is that the pain is no longer worth the gain.

I for one am glad I'm soon to be out of it and I'm delighted for my friends who are in the same position. The way most EFL teachers are treated not just in Saudi but all over is shameful.

To be able to teach a few hours here and there when I choose and with those I choose is such a relief. To know I'll be financially OK in my old age if I make it that far is also a good feeling.

If I were in my 20s just starting out, knowing what I know now, I'd retrain pronto.

naysayers - noun. 1. a person who habitually expresses negative or pessimistic views:

You mean people who say stuff like this?

I started nothing. I merely expressed fact and opinion. Us Brits aren't into pissing contests like the 'mericans and their 'Be all that you can be' and all that. I'm happy with what I have and couldn't care less whether it's more or less than anyone on this forum.

KFUPM's pay is poor. The conditions all over the Middle East are getting worse because of low oil. This isn't going to change any time soon. What some call 'naysaying' is just realism and some people don't want to hear that. The ME takes its toll on a lot of people in various ways. For some it's their mental health, for others their physical health or a marriage. IMO the salaries being offered these days just don't make it worth it.

You accused me of being jealous (green eyed monster) I assume it was of your financial situation and not your looks or your hot wife. Laughing

I agree with all that: the pain is no longer worth the modest gain.
