I assumed we were talking about Private classes, hence the legwork remark. Legwork being getting out there and finding the clients that will pay the amounts you want. Otherwise, the vast majority of those that come to you will be looking to do lessons on the cheap.
Admittedly, if you are a great teacher in your school, your reputation will generate some pvt offers, but I find this to be a unreliable way to arrange things unless you've been around that area for over a year or two.
Also, you keep referring to 10 years ago as if it means you're still clued into everything. I was in China 10 years ago too. It's a very different country now. Boots on the ground, dude. Stop thinking about the past, and start dealing with it personally.
And honestly, we here on Dave's can tell you our opinions, but it all turns out different for everyone. Just chatting isn't going to give you any concrete answers. China is just one of those places where very little remains the same.

Sure, you can. However, I suspect most language mills are going to pay you less than you expect, and those that do accept your demand will screw you some way. Shanghai is a popular destination for all manner of people. You're going to face a fair bit of competition and that will affect your rates.

As I said previously... Get your boots on the ground and start making those connections... Just talking about it means nothing. Some people do very well in China, and some don't. Perhaps it will work out the way you suspect, but I'm somewhat jaded by China and tend to be more cautious about what's likely vs what possible. |
