By the way, I did find an agent who is promising me that public schools will pay on time, Joy Zuo. She claims that she has never heard of any of her public school teachers being paid late.
I took a screenshot of her promise and am willing to hold her responsible and will call her out in front of everyone if a school pays late. |
Some things to consider:
1) Some people are liars, and just don't care. Some people think that getting rich through deception as being very clever.
2) Possibly getting yourself harassed and/or arrested in China ?

Well, I'm not going to call her the B word or say anything untrue if the school is late with the salary. I will just give a disclaimer over here that the agent couldn't keep a promise that she made and then switch to Goldstar TEFL. Of course I'm not going to be violent about it. That would be silly and unneeded. |

In my first couple of years in Shanghai, like many others, I was paid in cash. I always found this bizarre with 50 or 60 FTs coming to the accounting office to collect their ball of cash every month. In recent years, all teachers at my group of schools get paid directly onto their bank card as set up by the school.
The handling of money (or lack of now)has changed so much over the past few years here. For what was predominantly a cash society, most people don't carry cash at all now. Everthing is paid for by WeChat or Alipay from expensive appliances to a lighter. I can go weeks at a time without seeing cash. If somebody said that to me three or four years ago, I would have laughed at them.
@OP
Haha, the agent won't give two hoots if your pay is late once you are placed at your school.
No agent can guarantee that a school will always pay you on time, so I'd just put that notion out of my head if I was you. Concentrate on the school and try to be put in touch with a FT who has previously worked there instead. |

| For me personally, if the salary is not in the bank on pay day then I am not in the classroom the following day/week, but job hunting instead. |

| I get paid late every now and then, usually just takes me reminding my boss to sort it out. |

Me too. It's not that big a deal. A simple phone call can sort it out. |

That's kind of extreme. I would immediately assume that they have a valid reason: the payroll lady caught the flu, the boss forgot to add my bank information to the payroll, or the computers are broken. I would just give them a week to sort it out. I understand how disorganized Chinese life is. |

Yeah, it's flaky teachers with the above attitude that give us all a bad name |

Couldn't possibly be serious about that above claim, but you never know with some of the flakes you find here. |

Haha, might need to change the name to 'Dave's shelter for flaky teachers in China forum' |

Two things.
Firstly, if the pay is late why should you turn up to work? In your contract you are expected to fulfil your part of the contract, i.e. turning up to work. If you didn't turn up to work would you expect to still be paid for it? No. Unless you're a trust fund kid or you're on a religious mission you expect to be paid for your hours of time and effort.
Secondly, what's with Chinese finance departments doing everything manually. Why don't they set up automatic payments and process them the day before. In the UK firms pay you at midnight on the last day of the month. It's not a debate or question about if you will get it on that day or not, you get it. If there is a banking error or something happens with the banks computers, you will be able to claim back the charges.
It boggles my mind here how the finance department can't just put 'teacher a 10000' and it be processed automatically. I guess since most finance departments don't actually do a lot of work, they keep it 'manual' so that they look busy. In other companies and sectors I've worked in, even if the finance person is sick/ill/late you still get paid because it's all automatic.
My wife's companies finance person went to Japan for two weeks holiday and left thirty odd people without pay for two weeks, which is ridiculous. |

| 30 days is a lot of time for the pay to be on time. |

Yes, that is all logical, but this is China. Understand how hectic their lives are. They don't do everything according to plan. That's just how they roll in China. |

That is a part of the reason why we are here - to expose them to a more global way of doing things. As the #2 economy in the world what is taking place now is absurd.
I never let anyone get away with telling me, "but this is...." (fill in the blank for any country). This is the 21st century now. Such a lame excuse may have been acceptable in the past, but is unacceptable in the present international community. |

No, absolutely not. We aren't there to change their lives. We're just there to teach English. Stop making it up in your mind that you are superior to them and need to correct their behaviors. |
