Yes, still bothering. Perhaps it's some vague attempt to educate you (Shmooj) in order to convince you that it's ok to express an opinion and/or make a generalisation.
Yep, agreed, your astronomer guy is pretty unusual. However, as I keep trying to explain, my original post was intended as a general discussion; a discussion 'of the average Joe', if you like. The first post mentioned the phrase 'half-seriously'. Shame you didn't read it.
As for your question "Do I know any Japanese people?"
Well, I just asked my fiancee and her father. They both confirmed they are real people and not figments of my imagination........
I will ask the others I know later, but I expect a similar response.
Just had a look at your web site (from your Avatars URL). Nice photos, by the way. |

PS. the only redeeming show on US TV, IMO, is the Simpsons.
You haven't seen Family Guy? Brilliant stuff...

It's just making the speaker feel like they're interesting. Giving them face I guess you could say. As, I think it was Smooj said, it shouldn't be taken as a genuine expression of interest.
I used to kind of enjoy saying something mildly surprising or provocative to a group of Japanese just to hear them all go 'eeeeeeehhhhhhhh' in unison. Now, I find it a bit annoying. Just another automatic, programmed response. |

I like telling people that I want to eat strange things... I kind of like the "Ehhhhhhhhhhh!" reactions I get. I'm pretty strange, I guess... but they do like it when I make some crazy food statement. And, even more so when i suggest they try it... or ask if they've already had it.

What a bunch of negative people! Why would something so innocent and wonderful bother you? I also get exited easily, whether someone went on a trip to Spain or found a coupon for a free yogurt in the newspaper. Life is too short to be so negative. Rejoice in the little things in life. You all are going to die way too early if someone's jubilant response gets under your skin. |

Oh no! Mike is bored. We better stop posting.
You don't have to read it, dude.

If I believed that all the Japanese over-reactions were genuine, innocent expressions of wonder, amazement, whatever... I would never criticize something like that. It's the phonyness that bugs me. |
