Not necessarily - a friend has a job working for ACE, which allows him to save around 1000 pounds a month.

But how long has he had that job for, and how long do you think he'll keep it? I don't want to be cynical, but that's the problem with this line of work; the good jobs that pay well and last a long time are few and far between. Confused
Good luck to your friend: if he lasts five years and saves up 50,000 pounds I'll be very, very impressed.

I wandered into TEFl as a way to extend my travels in the early 90's. After a few years of European contracts I realised I actually enjoyed the teaching as much as the travel and so went back to the UK, trained to teach high school and then embarked on a career in teaching English to people who could supposedly already speak it!

After 7 years moving up the ladder I realised that I had forgotten what it was to enjoy teaching because all the politics of the UK system got in the way. So I gave up a promotion, sold my house and car (I miss my car!!) and headed for Peru - and it was the best thing I have ever done.

I now teach people who want to learn. I teach in a place where I am not constrained by a one-size-fits-all curriculum. I may not have fancy resources like inter-active whiteboards and the salary doesn't compare but who cares? I enjoy my work, I have time for myself which isn't spent worrying about the next class and having come from the northern to southern hemispheres I get two summers this year!!

I've asked before, but nobody ever told me. What in the hell is an interactive whiteboard?

^ Hi Justin

It's an electronic whiteboard with a built-in printer

so you can print out whatever you've written on it.

It's also illuminated, making it easier on the eyes,

especially for people sitting in the back row.

You can connect your PC or laptop to it as well,

and some of the newer models offer wireless:

It's basically just a on steroids. Laughing

Keepwalking-that's what I call a success story! All schools are not created alike. I'm glad I never did get that B.Ed.

I'll be heading there too shortly. Sounds great!

an overly-expensive, over-rated 'toy' which for some reason known only to themselves, the uk government think should be in every classroom. It is basically a whiteboard linked to a computer. The whiteboard itself reacts to pressure, through a special pen or your finger. You can draw on the board, annotate texts that you have projected onto it, - basically it is a giant computer screen and instead of using a keyboard or a mouse to activate it, the board itself responds to your directions.

It is great for about 3 weeks, and then you realise that you go home with a headache everynight and kids suddenly get migraines who have never had problems before.... Like all new toys, ok in small doses, but not all it is cracked up to be. Great for showing movies though! Full size screen, surround sound.....

Who wants to retire? Boring!!!
I hope to be teaching long after I'm 65, or at least working in some capacity.

Maybe I'll sell used interactive whiteboards from the UK! Wink

And if you can't? Suppose you become ill or disabled; how will you pay your bills?

The options are endless:

1. Spend your inheritance.
2. Or if your parents are still living go mooch off them.
3. Return to your home company and bludge off welfare.
4. Join the circus (as part of the freak show if neccessary).
5. Find a rich spouse before any of this becomes and issue.
6. Find a rich relative to sponge off.
7. Sue somebody or many somebodies.
8. Release a hit record.
9. Invest in a pyramid scheme.

If all else fails there's always
10. Sell your body for medical experiments.

Laughing Why worry about something that may never happen!?!

and given the choice, would 8 out of 10 students want a 23-year-old athletic funny and charming blonde stunner, or a wrinkly 67 year baldy who stinks of old spice?

Im retiring at 50, pass the aftershave.

Given the choice, 8 out of 10 students would probably like to pick up English by osmosis but they don't get that choice either! Razz Very Happy

I taught ESL overseas for ten years. I loved it but I have since moved back to my home country and am working as a primary school teacher. There are so many more perks to teaching in Australia - holidays, better pay, superannuation. I would like to go back overseas one day but to an international school, not ESL teaching.
