Yesterday was another dark day in Australia's history. Can the country sink any lower? I can't wait to leave.

Leon,

I certainly share your concern re Peter Costello - after all,the man is pro-republic ! Although I doubt very much that he would be pushing that issue very much once he becomes PM .

Do you really think that there are few,if any, significent differences between the major parties ?

In one area of public policy I'm glad that Howard won.In a previous posting I referred to the co-contribution superannuation scheme, something that would benefit low income earners;such as ESL teachers in China ! Labor's policy was to abolish that scheme,in order to fund tax breaks for other sectors.

However,in some areas the Govt's policy has been detrimental for the smooth running of the economy - eg the 1st Home Owners Scheme has merely accelerated over-capitalisation trends in the home property market, thus making homes MORE expensive for 1st home buyers. The Govt brags about its efforts to keep interest rates low - another factor in accelerating property prices.I wouldn't be surprised that in a few months' time if interest rates happen to rise significantly, on account of pressure on the A$ - many of those who voted for Howard will soon be cursing him when they soon find it nigh impossible to meet their many financial obligations.

Peter
