I do agree with latefordinner...
My observation was based on the present situation.
Should they change their position, which of course is possible, all bets are off. |

Roger, if you want to continue flogging this dead horse you can do so without me. |
wowser,
"they" don't want foreigners here - they tolerate them.
As for "knucklehead", you have just described yourself in the most accurate manner.
And, burnsie, what happened to me "8 years" ago, has happened to others much more recently. I know that, and I deem others lucky who have been giving stupid advice.
To work on a tourist or business visa doesn't make you legal; you are tolerated just like illegal immigrants in certain European countries are tolerated - they can't be repatriated.
But if the PSB get a call from Peking, they will clear the streets of Guangzhou or any city.
I wasn't based in "another province" at that time; I was holder of a work visa issued in Guangdong. And, to illustrate that even Guangdong can take things seriously, I went one day to ask about extending my visa; they asked whether I had a residence permit. I had. They took it from me, claiming it was "a fake"; although they said it was a "fake" they didn't prosecute me or fine me for carrying a "fake" document; they contented themselves with confiscating it.
That was in easy-going Shenzhen. |

ROGER: I am sorry about what happened and once again thank you for
Also, I am Chinese myself, I am just hoping that I will blend in with the rest of the people there and avoid any inspection...hahhaa... |
Well, my green friend, I have all along known that you are not a Westerner; the fact that you seem to be holding a western passport may not be as weird as another aspect: the fact that you, a CHinese, have to resort to ask westerners how to find a job in your own country most certainly is!
This baffling "innocence", or less charitably, - ignorance is the reason why I stick to the rules. I don't believe it is necessary to tell a total stranger how to circumvent laws in a foreign country as we all want to enjoy our life abroad without nasty glitches.
Unfortunately, if you ask Chinese you seldom get reliable information or reasonable answers. I know that since I have had to tell aty least half a dozen Chinese decision-makers how to go about hiring a holder of a foreign passport.
They seldom believe me, and none of them has been able to celebrate last New Year without some unpleasant memory!
The most unpleasant memories are, however, always reserved for the chap that is not from this outlandish place called China! |

Alright Roger boy, you have managed to piss me off... and I bet that it was your intention to do so and I lose on behalf of giving into YOUR STUPID IGNORANCE! I AM CHINESE-AMERICAN!! you nitwit! Born and raised in NEW YORK. I would assume that ANYONE that replies to these discussion boards would have read carefully AND THOROUGHLY before they give their few words of advice! But your stinkin EGO has blinded you AGAIN! You are EXACTLY THOSE IGNORANT WESTERNERS I TRY TO AVOID IN AMERICA. The ones that can't tell or see the difference between a CHINESE-AMERICAN and a CHINESE! The ones that would probaby say to me, "Oh, your English is so good...Where are you from?" AND the ones that go to China thinking that THEY KNOW IT ALL because they are a FREAKIN WESTERNER and that they have "seen it all"

You want to know why you seldom get "reliable information or reasonable answers", it's because you ALREADY have an answer made up in that egotistical and biased mind of yours. You haven't taken out the time to actually understand the Chinese culture and to think from THEIR perspective. I mean that should be a key factor in teaching in a foreign country...to immerse yourself fully into the culture and MOST IMPORTANTLY, have an OPEN MIND. You make judgements on people because you think you "know" everything...with that condescending tone of voice YOU ARE NEVER GOING TO GET RELAIBLE ANSWERS FROM THE CHINESE...BECAUSE you were not able to EARN their trust! There's your Chinese lesson for the day!
I respected all of the people's reply to my topic, there is no "innocence" played, but RESPECT and APPRECIATION. although everyone had different information, I took them ALL into consideration. your slandering on regards to my character has insulted me and for future reference, don't reply to my discussion posts again if you are going to be so nasty...! |

There goes YOUR egoism and your condescension, your judgementalism and your pompousness!
I don't need your pontifications on how to "earn" respect from those CHinese. I don't ask how to break their own laws because if they break it it is me that's going to pay the price, or at least a considerable part of it.
In my book, "open-mindedness" doesn't stretch into taking a free ride, making false statements to obtain a visa of a chosen category. You haven't earned their respect either, apparently, since they didn't tell you what you wanted to read. What passes for "culture" is vagueness, non-committal or obfuscating clouds of verbosity, and a lot of empty promises.
And: I am not guilty of disparaging the CHinese in such a crude fashion: "...they never follow their book..."
Contrary, I know they sometimes do!
You will find out whether you are fit to "learn' from their culture... Good luck anyway! |

This immersion is very difficult. Being there is immersion but to unlock the door on understanding the culture is difficult. I notice you refer to avoiding westerners instead of other Americans this is interesting. |
