Enough about South Africans, let's talk wine!

There's a "re-opening" party at Riddim tomorrow night. It's new and improved and, in fact, is not Riddim anymore! The new name is NAYAH and tomorrow night is the "opening".

See you guys there??

Sorry to be a realist here, but the topic of this thread is English Time and it has been totally coopted to be a social gathering. Can you guys get off the thread and just CALL each other or something? It concerns me that potential teachers looking here will not find much useful information, positive or negative.

And, of course, Merry Christmas to you all, however, you celebrate it.

So Molly any mention of old English Time will do, we have to keep it in the top half of this link. I'v made my point before, and I direct the same question to you again Molly. What will you and the company you repersent pay staff in the new year. One U.S $ is now at just under 1.4 Y.T.L, This means alot of teachers will be shrot of cash.

So your right Molly the thread of this topic was how mean English time was, is, and perhapes will be(?) Confused

To you and all have good old Marry Xams.

Believe it or not, other than being cheap and crooked, there's a method to their madness.

If ET can frustrate enough of the older staff into leaving, they can hire newbies at a much cheaper rate.

They recently lowered a teacher's salary for no reason, without telling her. Can u imagine the woman's shock when she received her pay.

They haven't given a reason and said they can't change it, because they only review salaries twice a year. However, they lowered her salary when it wasn't even time for a review.

I know people love to say "this is Turkey," but is that always a valid excuse for ripping people off, or worse yet simply accepting it.

Merry Xmas and in English Time's case....BAH HUMBUG...Smile

Getting old experienced teachers to leave and replacing them with newbies (can't believe I've used that word) goes on everywhere, from language schools to the best universities. I recently moved on after 5 years with my former emloyer, one of the main reasons being that I'd become to experienced and valued a member of staff to possibly have much of a future there.

Actually I disagree. I think that people are likely to be encouraged by the fact that there is a relatively tight and supportive network of foreigners here in Istanbul and to a somewhat lesser degree, the rest of Turkey (speaking for my time in Kayseri, I can say that the local support network usually did not exist at all). Jobs and schools can elicit a vast range of opinions, from bliss to sheer horror. Wouldnt it be nice to know that even if everything goes completely mad you wont fall flat on your face, alone in a big scary city? And that these people can give you tips and suggestions for new schools you could try?

My point, Yaramaz, is that the getting together for wine thread has nothing to do with ET.

And to respond to the others: ET does not encourage old teachers to leave in order to hire new ones. That is absolutely not true. We do try to get rid of crappy teachers, but they don't last long enough to get "old".

And our teachers are not short of cash, as they have plenty of hours. Anyway, the TL (old or new) is worth more these days, and teachers get paid in TL.

Sorry to see some people are so negative about our school It has its problems, and I do try to address them with mixed success, but in general it's still a good place to work. We have 200 teachers and very few have posted here, so I think that is a good indication.

To all of you, a happy new year with no bah humbugs-

Dear Molly you want us to keep to the point. Then I will.
I do not hate E.Time
Yet what type of strange math are you doing when you say the T.L old or new is worth more. Shocked
Look at the facts 1. You are still paying teachers at 2002-2003 rates on average between 12-16 millon (old and new teacher rates)
Fact 2. Even thou inflation has fallen the avareage rate of infation for past 24 months or so has been at around 12-15 %. per year. Even given this most basic form of maths an average teacher working in the company you repersent is without question down in real cash terms by over 10 % in on year. This is not game of words or I.T skills (god I'm bad at this thing What is I.T). It's pure simple cash and we all know how to count. There may be other reasons to recommemnd E/Time to new teachers like the poor sod who started this ( Is she still out there and did she start with E.Time or even show up in Turkey- Be nice way to round off the year by finding out)money is not one.

Most teachers working at ET DON'T complain ON THE NET while they are working there.

However, meet any of the gang from the Kad or Taks. branch and you will get an ear full.

These teachers are a bit discreet and know how to use the PM mode..(am I the only one who has received PMs from disgruntled teachers who don't wish to jeopardize their jobs)...others simply wait untill they've left the school.

Two years ago, ET Taksim, was losing teachers faster than you could say "where have they gone?" They were so disgusted with the management that many never even bothered to give notice...as this usually meant your hours would be taken away in the last month..and you'd be broke.

Now ET doesn't care too much about teachers, however, their student's mean a great deal, becz that's where the money comes from.

It was embarassing to the school to have a teacher disappear with no word and no idea if he would come back...what does one tell the students?

Molly and an ex manager Nur Kosova did some decent damage control...Under Nur, people actually had expectations for the school...this was one manager who could be trusted...she wasn't perfect...but she didn't try to rip you off...and the school improved big time.

Nur got fed up and left in 2003, and the successive managers since then have shown a lot of energy coming up with ways to pay teachers less. Sadly the same motivation is not exhibited when it comes to solving problems that have existed in the classrooms for the last two to three years.

Kadikoy has similiar problems.

If ET isn't encouraging their more experienced teachers to leave, then they have a helluva way of showing it.

BTW, the contract extortion bit mentioned above, doesn't seem to be happening at some of the smaller branches. It does make one wonder why the teachers at some branches were picked upon and not others.
