Clearly, money/earnings are important...but for some of us, it isn't the most important aspect of accepting a job in a given location.

It sounds trite, but I really wouldn't accept a job offering 3 times what I'm making now if it meant I had to go to a country that I considered as having too harsh a climate, or a ban on selected social activities, or a difficult culture to get used to (yes, that last one is very subjective).

There are quite a few teaching in this country that have already run the rat race, escaped the Matrix, been there-done that...whatever phrase you like...and are happy to take a pay cut for the rewards available here.

I've already chased down and captured my 'exotic woman' and married her. And rather than shout, I'm writing it with a smile, feet up on the desk, listening to the hum of the printer as it spits out 500 peso notes. Well, like the song goes, 2 out of 3 ain't bad. Laughing

I don't think anyone posted that they "don't care about money" - only that some things are (gasp) even more important than money!

A culture I could relate to and learn to appreciate. One that I wanted to learn more about, and still do.

A cultural experience that was by and large a positive one, despite the lack of money.

The above are 2 things that I have greatly missed since I left Mexico.

****************

However, when I was in Mexico I missed some things as well:

A safe and secure postal system, where I knew things sent to me would arrive intact.

The ability to do simple things like open a bank account.

The idea that I could afford to call home if I wanted.

A secure income and the peace of mind that comes from knowing you will have enough to pay all the bills at the end of the month and still be able to eat.

A sense that if I worked harder, I could save some money.

**********************

Funny how we always remember the good things about a place when we leave, but forget the bad.

Time to pursue my interests would be more important than money.

That's an interesting one. I haven't thought about it much before, but I think this is a major component to satisfaction in a poor area. I know I could go work my tail off in Moscow and make bucks. I just don't want to. Even here in town, I could earn more if I tried.

It was more to do with the "school" I worked for than with Mexico, but I really felt like the harder I worked for them, the more they would rip me off. Laughing

Those are nothing. For some real laughs I still go to to the Korean Board every once in a while.

Anyone want my job? Mandatory office hours where they can just pull the "hey, we need you" with a class that's already 5 minutes in progress. You do get an internet connection, though. Crap salary and a stifling beaurocracy. Way out in the boondocks so no social life.
