Quack research I don't think. Clay and Charcoal have a negetive charge and most poisons have a positive charge. They bind with each other and nutralize each other.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ion
Ions
Anions are negatively charged ions, formed when an atom gains electrons in a reaction. Anions are negatively charged because there are more electrons associated with them than there are protons in their nuclei.
Cations are positively charged ions, formed when an atom loses electrons in a reaction, forming an 'electron hole'. Cations are the opposite of anions, since cations have fewer electrons than protons.
Dianion: a dianion is a species which has two negative charges on it; for example, the aromatic dianion pentalene.
Radical ions: radical ions are ions that contain an odd number of electrons and are mostly very reactive and unstable.
.....................................................................................................
Nature of the Ionic Bond
http://members.aol.com/profchm/ionic.html
An ionic bond is an electrical attraction between two oppositely charged atoms or groups of atoms. Normally, atoms are neutral and have no charge. However, in order to gain stability they will sacrifice their neutrality by either losing one or more of its outermost electrons thus becoming a positive ion (cation) or they will gain one or more electrons thus becoming a negative ion (anion). Elements that are described as "metallic" tend to lose electrons and elements that are described as "non-metallic" tend to gain electrons. Once this has happened then the resulting charged atoms will attract each other. That electrical attraction between two oppositely charged ions is referred to as an ionic bond. Most salts are ionic. Any metal will combine chemically with any non-metal to form ionic bonds that hold the molecule together. |

Hi Anda! Haven't seen you around for a long time!
Charcoal seems to be pretty well tried and true. Were you ever given burnt toast for a bad tummy? Same same.
Don't drink the water. I was given some Udaipur tap water by accident- just one gulp before being stopped (it had been put in a spring water bottle) and roiled for a few days.
If this sort of thing happens, stop what you are doing, take electrolytes (the powder is available in the pharmacy) and when you are well enough to eat, spend a few days on steamed white rice and banana lassis (no ice!!!).
I traveled with a good friend last year and he got sick first. He wouldn't stop being active, and eschewed the rice and banana lassi. He ended up going home because he couldn't shake it. I traveled alone for the next couple of months with no other problems than the one bout caused by the water.
As for ice- the ice can be made with mineral water, and then broken and washed off with tap water. This took me down pretty badly a few years back after having ice in a drink in the Foreign Correspondents club in Phnom Phen.
The best thing to do is to bring, or get on arrival, a course of cipro to have on hand, and have a relaxed attitude. You may get sick. It is part of the traveling experience, and you can learn a lot about a culture and people by the way you are treated while you are sick. If you must be sick, India is not a bad place to do it- people take grand care of you and you will be pampered and watched over.
If you plan to live in India, gradually acclimate yourself to the local environment. As someone said earlier- you can't keep the country out of your body. Get used to what the healthy locals consider safe. |

i totally recommend eating at the local food stalls. if locals are there and it's busy then go there. the worst places are where the turnover of food is slowest. try not to eat at hotel restuarants as they reheat the food night after night. i think, and i have always done this, brushing your teeth with tap water, though trying not to swallow too much builds up some immunity. obviously the more contact you have with the bacteria the stronger your immunity. the trick is to build it very slowly and carefully. probably not possible if youre in the country less than a month. wash your hands religiously is another good tip. |

Stop off in Afghanistan for a couple of weeks before coming to India. Your resistance will become phenomenal. It's ten time as filthy as India.
Imagine diarrhea coming out both ends. I don't have to imagine. |

sadly you are showing your ignorance of travel destinations. i gather by your very scared attitude that you have never been anywhere that could be called dirty. i would love to go to afghanistan, and will do so if/once it gets a bit safer. as for it being 10 times dirtier than india i doubt that. you also have no idea about how one builds immunity. i wish such small-minded people like yourself would stay off these forums. there was nothing wrong with my advice/opinion. it is what I do, it's not what You have to do. it works for me, and that's all there is about it; and ive been to many many countries, including india on 3 different occasions. |

I was 100% serious.
I traveled OVERLAND from Europe to India (and eventually SE Asia and Japan), 5 times, starting in 1970. I spent over 5 years in India, 2 years in Afghanistan, and a total of over 30 years in Asia, North Africa, and the middle east. Also traveled extensively in South America.
I know what I'm taliking about and have the stamps in 6 passports to prove it.
Who the h*ll are you to question someones veracity?
And yes, Afghanistan is far dirtier than India, because there is little water available to wash anything, and knowledge of germ theory hasn't reached there yet.
You sir, are a fool! |

well isnt that the pot calling the kettle black?????!!!!!!!!! you should practice what you preach. and IF you have travelled as you so forthrightly brag, then you would know well that minimal and gradual contact with germs strengthens one's immunity to them. therefore, what is your f@***** point except to have a rant cos you have nothing else to do. |

I see nothing offensive in my original post to set you off like a rabid dog.

JUST DON'T DRINK THE WATER!!! Whatever you eat on the streets MUST be cooked & steaming hot! Don't eat "pani puris" or any other snacks sold on the street carts.
I was well aware of all of this & STILL managed to get a stomach virus.
I made the mistake of ordering fruit drinks at a restaurant. Unfortunately my waiters would leave the restaurant & order the fruit drinks from the cart vendors on the street, come back & serve it to me. I was unaware I was being served fruit drink made with trash water. Disgusting. I'm 5' 7" & came back weighing 117 lbs. Was sick (diarrhea, vomit & sweat) out of my mind. |

I'm with you. Don't drink the water. Don't use the ice cubes (often overlooked). Peel fruit yourself. Don't eat salads. Watch street food being deep-fried in front of you. Don't touch your face. Carry Immodium. Pray. |
