Phils, I really hope you are not referring to me in that post of yours. I have every interest in teaching and probably more interest in Jakarta than most foreigners living there.
(ie. plan to get married there, became a muslim there, have many friends there, etc etc etc) |

You mentioned EF, I realise they don't pay the best but what is the teacher training/support like? |
I can only speak for the particular franchise I worked for. They were a reasonably well-run operation and treated the teachers well, but there was little additional training. I was shown the teachers room, pointed at the text books and supplementary materials, and then told "have at it - you start teaching tomorrow".
Part of the problem was that the school was new and had hired a DOS who was a complete dork. He was fired and the school stumbled along without an experienced DOS for several months. Towards the end of my year a competent and experienced DOS was hired. She started arranging weekly workshops and doing some serious training, and people still there tell me that things are better now. |

Wow, straight in the deep end, that must have been a bit hard to deal with.
What actual system does EF use? I heard of something called Nova? What is that? |

if you love jakarta then come for a year at a language school first, or commit to a 2 year deal at a national plus school. you can hook up a job with some schools without even a local interview (they often do phone interviews). Finding a wife is not a problem. Finding a good wife is harder (in any country). Conversely the same in finding a husband!
Forget about working for 3 months. it just can't happen. Give it a go for a year. |

Yes, that is now the plan, although I think I'll hold off on the wife till I am very well established professionally.
I may take a week say 3-4 months in and come home, pack everything up, sell off what I don't want and ship the rest - then move back permanently.
Thanks to all those who contributed advice. I'll be in Jakarta in July and now setting up interviews with schools - just so I am known and not one of a dozen facless CVs across a Dos's desk. |

Chester,
Had no idea that Nova was a franchise in "nipland" (is that Japan?), I've only been interested in Indonesia so haven't looked anywhere else to be honest.
Thanks for the heads up though. Silly me thought it was some form of teaching style or series of books like Headway for instance. |

"chucky"?
Sorry mate you got me on that one. No idea what you mean unless you are referring to that evil little doll from the Child's Play series of films. I'm afraid I'm a bit big to fill those shoes. |
