We always have plenty of fresh backpackers. The supermodel wife.?..well...you will have to ask "doors' about that one...whether she will come or not.Word is that he may be bringing a little of that famous Laotian rope. And no,I do not plan on donning a tutu and tripping the light fantastic with "doors"....unless of course,I have a few drinks first.Maybe Zakiah can bring the famous camel(Marmalade?). |

Dear Irish,
" However, I might be interested in purchasing a few candid shots to send out with my Christmas cards this year. "
Have they done away with the postal laws then? I'd thought sending obscene material through the mail was a federal offense. A wanton woman, huh? Well, if you ever go to China to teach, you could be, I suppose, a won ton woman, too. ( Stop me before I do it again ).
Regards,
John |

More jokes like that and I'll be driven to drink! Or at least prodded to walk down the hall and hit the cough medicine...hard.
Yes, please, Zakiah, do bring the camel. I want to meet the magnificent beast that was almost named for scot47. Maybe he can teach the camel to spit on backpackers as they walk by. |

Dear Irish,

If your user name is accurate, that's probably not a drive but a short walk. We Sons and Daughters of Erin seem, like the Native Americans, to have a fatal weakness for the aqua vita. Makes you wonder a bit just how much of the inclination towards indulging might have some genetic underpinnings.
Regards,
John |

Well, John, I hate to admit it but I suspect it's true. My dear old dad--God rest his conniving con-man's soul--certainly fit the hard-drinking, hard-living, charming Irishman stereotype. Luckily, I'm past the days of living up (or down, depending on your point of view) to all that. Maybe I should try to be like his father. Grandpa never touched a drop--he only sold it during Prohibition. Unfortunately, he had to take a hatchet to the still when my then 8-year-old father found it and nearly killed himself with his first taste of demon drink. Kids!
My user name is fairly accurate, except for the bit of French blood courtesy of my mother. All that seems to do is give me an absurd sense of superiority and a slight aversion to having fun.

Dear Irish,
Just the opposite in my family. Dad was the teetotaler whereas Gramps was the boozer. I always figured it skipped a generation, especially since Gramps used to be in vaudeville and I'm a bit of a ham, myself ( OK, maybe more than " a bit " ). But, to paraphrase the Bard - the fault, dear Irish, lies not in our genes but in ourselves. I don't think, once you get past a certain age, say 7 or 8, that you can change your " basic personality ", but I do think you can change behavior. Not easily, it's true, but if you're motivated enough, it can be done - inshallah.
Regards,
John |

Ah, I see--classroom as stage. Perhaps inside every teacher there's a frustrated actor trying to get out. Well, I guess we should put you in charge of lining up the entertainment for the conference.
Couldn't agree with you more on the issue of behavior change. My motivation: seeing the behavior of some of the kids I go to school with when they cut loose. (Yeah, yeah, but to me they're kids.) "Surely I was never that dumb when I was their age," I think in horror only to hear a little voice reply, "Oh, no--you were way dumber." |

Dear Irish,
Well, as a poster on another thread wisely put it - it's not the experiences you have that are so important as what, if anything, you learn from them.
OK - so I'm a slow learner, but once I DO get something inside my rather thick skull, it tends to stay there.
Regards,
John |

Perhaps we are being a little narrow-minded in thinking about just one or two locations. Why don't we start a great march, trekking over the face of the Earth, more and more English teachers swarming out of their schools to join us at every town we pass until... until we have a huge army of English teachers, waving banners and dressed in rags, marching through the dust! An army! An army, I say!! Then nothing will stop us!!!

Dear R,
Nice new avatar - but I miss the old one.

What'll we call it - Bar Trek? Les Miz just closed in New York, but your idea could take it's place. The fatal flaw, however, is we would have to abandon our classrooms, break off our noble, humanitarian mission to bring enightenment to the heathen and the present perfect tense to the unlettered. Never, I say, never will I desert my post ( well, not until July 7th, anyway ). The show must go on.
Regards,
Trouper John |

I know John, I miss it too. I just fancied having this little guy hanging around for a while. Maybe sometime I'll go back to Salieri (or merge the two?)

Well, that is more or less what we always do...although granted,we do get some unconventional people. It would certainly be cheaper. But the original idea was to get away from the computer for awhile...and see what people really look like and act like...well,I didn't say it would be easy. But from small acorns...or something like that.I would like to meet some of these people in person. |

Bnix...I think you missed the irony of my post ..of course that is what we do already...personally I think that getting a bunch of EFL teachers to agree on anything is a lot like trying to herd a bunch of cats....if anyone knows the collective noun for a bunch of cats please post...!!! |

Hello Once Again:
Take your pick:
A pounce of cats
A cluster of cats
A clowder of cats
A clutter of cats
A glaring of cats |
