gyudon and maguro sushi are probably my favorites, but there's so much to think of.

sashimi in summer, nabe in winter. yakitori with beer (anyday/night). udon, freshly made. simple...with just a dipping sauce. tempura (yes, of portuguese origin). yaki niku during the mad-cow scare (cheap).

i never really liked ramen (except in Sapporo).

there were times when i hated J food and craved almost any other cuisine except it. so i understand the critics. but the things they do good they do very good (and vice versa).

Not everywhere has good ramen, but I am a fan. The best ramen I've had was also in Sapporo.

Whoa! An 11 year old thread raised from the dead!

I like that famous ramen shop, forget the name. They have the private booth that one sits in and they slide the ramen through a slot.

They have shops in Fukuoka, Tokyo, and I guess most large cities. I can picture the one in Shibuya just down from Tower Records. Ichiran, I think. I recommend this place if you want good ramen.

Ichiran Ramen

I know some here might cringe at this, but I like Matsuya and Yoshinoya. What a great idea. Open 24 hours. No frills. Fast. Cheap. Good, hot miso shiru. Menus change throughout the seasons. Haiyai, Umai, Yasuii! Great after a night of drinking, too.

Finally, CoCo Ichiban. This is a great curry shop. Some, like the one in Shinjuku Nishi-Guchi, are open 24 hours. They'll even give you extra curry sauce if you ask for it. Sometimes they charge extra, sometimes it's "service."

I love all those places you mentioned. I've never tried the private ramen place, but I've heard about it.

I love Coco Ichibanya!
