| One observation I will make is that EVERY Japanese friend I have that has spent a considerable amount of time(uni, job placement etc.) overseas has no desire to ever live in Japan again. |
Funnily enough, my 2 closest Japanese friends that have just returned to Japan after a long tenure in Australia, one even had PR status. |

I was employed at a university in Tokyo and experienced the same coddled, unmotivated, immaturity found in the high schools, absolutely no difference. Teachers were given the freedom to design their own courses and use any materials they desired and inevitably found themselves in direct competition with Disney character collecting and 'print club'. Toward the end of my second year, when asked by my boss to renew my contract he looked down his nose, clucked his tongue and remarked, "oh yeah, private high school."
While I find my current position personally rewarding and fulfilling it has very little to do with teaching English and everything to do with being a token foreign English teacher. I base my success on the small number of bright individuals whom with I am able to develop a meaningful rapport. It is these students' lives that I feel I am able to impact in a positive and beneficial manner. They are few but their potentials are unlimited.
Many blessings,
