The item that I have found almost impossible to track down is depilatory wax. Plenty of depilatory cream (still relatively expensive by chinese living costs) but hunting, searching and yes even some advanced miming has only turned up one small jar of wax. |
I'm living in a small city, so here is my list of essentials (bear in mind that if you're living in a big city, there might be more 'essentials' available).
-Ditto on the wax, I brought lots of ready-to-use wax strips with me as well as an Epil, which is basically an electrical device that works like waxing.
- Deodorant and DENTAL FLOSS! I can't stand tooth picks
- Adaptors if you're bringing electrical applicances from home, I'm an Aussie and our voltage is similar to China, so I didn't need a transformer but those from US/UK/EUR will probably need them as well.
- Calenders of famous places, natural or otherwise, from your home country. It makes for a great 'show and tell' lesson and can double as a posters for your bedroom wall.
- Sunscreen! It is sold in China but in tiny bottles and at a high price, I brought a 1 litre tub with me as I use it everyday.
- Disposable razors, as women don't really shave here.
- Favourite music from home, the Western music in my town is mostly Yanni and Celine Dion as well as pop music, so it helps I've got my own selection.
- A stuffed toy! It might sound ridiculous but there's nothing better than having a reminder of home sitting on your bed, I know it helps me stay connected to Australia.
- Last but not least, a pocket translater and the Lonely Planet's guide to China. |

Dental floss is becoming more and more common in China now. I have seen them being sold in the Hualian supermarket here (the ones with a plastic handle). Also mouthwash and (wow) oral-care strips! I guess the Chinese are finally starting to pay attention to oral hygiene (especially bad breath). It's so disappointing seeing a beautiful female student with badly-stained teeth (from drinking and rinsing with well water). |

The trend hasn't hit my town yet, although we ARE advanced enough to have a McDonalds and KFC. Maybe that just exasperates the problem? |

You won't catch me eating puppies. There is a very small chance that Cu Cullain was a distant ancestor of mine if he ever existed and I wouldn't want the ban to fall upon me.
But with that exception (and my rule about not eating anything that still has eyes or is visibly moving when it reaches the table) I try to be a "when in Rome" kind of guy. |

How does anyone know if the medication bought is counterfeit or dangerous? The big pharmacy chains make their money by satisfied customers returning. Non effective drugs are bad for business.
I hear stories of local made drugs, packed in "look like the real thing" foil strips and boxes, but when I buy any medication, dud or otherwise, they do the same job as the ones bought overseas.
Pan Pharmaceuticals in Australia showed how unreliable the Western manufacturers are!!! I think there is a lot of myth about the medication business in China.
From my experience, in street pharmacies and hospitals, I have not found any evidence of OTC type western products being anything less than what they say they are. I wonder if you had any real doubts about the drugs used when you had your baby, they may have been Chinese in origin.
In addition, to carry and store maybe 12 months supply of your possibly (or not) needed tablets is not a good idea. You have to dispose of surplus ones at a later date, polluting things, or give them away. Please don't. |

The Pan Pharmaceuticals story happened about 2 years ago. An Australian firm, making most of the additives to medications, including all the OTC 'Health' style products were caught out with various problems including batch control, additives, processing etc.
The recall of all products by any manufacturer that had any of their stuff in them resulted in the biggest withdrawal of any kind in the world of medications and Dietary supplements and Vitamin preparations.
Supermarkets, Pharmacies, Health food shops, clinics, even small corner shops who stocked throat lozenges or minor analgesics were stripped of stock. The case is still going on, with further revelations of malpractice etc.
I mentioned it to show that possible dodgy meds may not be exclusive to China!!
Google "Pan Pharmaceuticals" to find details including lists of all the products recalled. Fascinating story. |

Get used to the following:
1) The Chinese are incredibly inefficient
2) They create problems and issues when they do not need to be created
3) They will cheat you the first opportunity they get
4) If they have logic, it is completely flipped UPSIDEDOWN
5) Everything is turned into a big production

I flew into the local airport yesterday and tried to get a cab to take me to my house. The first cab I went to told me it would cost 100 rmb. The second told me 100 rmb. I asked him to use the meter, he said it was broken. I said "100 rmb" and pointed at my crotch and his mouth.
I walked to the street and hailed a cab.
The cab driver said 50 rmb. I started to get out and he said 40 rmb. I said use the meter and again started to get out. He said ok.
This was for a fare of 28 rmb to my house.
The Chinese will cheat you every opportunity they can. |

I have noticed that of all the thinkgs that are HARD to find in China (or at least in my small town in Guangdong) it's impossible for me to get cheese!
Is it legal to bring Parmazen cheese in a can to China?
Also then next time I visa Aus Ill be stocking up on oregano, basil, nutmeg, cinnamon. Maybe some of you are laughing at me, but they are just impossible to buy around here! (Gaozhou Guangdong)

Too right! About 5 weeks ago all the foreigners had a meeting about various issues....man, oh man, out comes all the college CAMERAS, expensive water bottles that had been ordered specially and....the infamous FRUIT BOWLS!
We still didn't get through everything and I've been trying to organise another (urgent) meeting for the last 2 WEEKS- everytime I mention the M word the vice dean runs to the corner and howls, then at 10pm the night before this 'grand meeting' he calls to cancel under mysterious circumstances! Keep tryin' next week....... |

Wal Mart sells cream cheese and cheese slices. There is one in lots of big cities... Taiyuan has one. |
