One of my fears is the EU bureacracy. A friend in Italy was beomaning the fact that her family's factory was buried in paperwork because of the EU.

CAN THERE BE MORE PAPERWORK THAN HERE?! Have you not been to that post office where international packages arrive? Shocked My first time there I was in tears.

And haven't you noticed the official names of businesses here? There is so much paperwork that some people think ahead to what what areas they might possibly want to expand into and add it when they first register. So even though it is just a small construction company, it is called something like- Mehmet Karpuzcu architecture construction tourism hotel biscuit baking basketweaving company ltd.

MORE paperwork?! Say it is not so! Shocked

What say you, resident Turkish person?

Resident Turkish person will respond with a denial and an attack on the OP`s country of origin regardless of whether he has been there or knows anything about it.

No, they are not worth it. They are deluded and just running away from their own countries. The locals have no time for them and they earn crap.

Why do so many poeople in Europe think that Turks will invade their country looking for work ?
A more likely event is that European manufacturers fed up with paying higher wages and dealing with stronger unions will see this country as a place to transfer their factories to exploit the younger workforce and take advantage of the countries huge natural rescources .
Basically without Turkey, Europe is up the creek without a paddle .

I don't know that Europe can't survive without Turkey, but I think Europe should be begging Turkey to join and allowing Turkey to set their own terms, at least economic and political, rather than the other way around (I don't mind Europe, however hypocritical of them, setting certain standards of human rights, free speech, etc...). Europe has a lot to gain from Turkey, and it seems what they claim they will lose is a lot of BS from a few conservatives.

Fair comment, but, thats only half the story . Its no secret that Europe is getting older and on a global level its market cannot compete with the bigger ecnomies ,therefore it HAS to expand .Turkey with its large relatively young population offers not only a bigger opening market place but also the potential income to support those older citizens our friend stan was on about earlier .The fact that by completing this union it will avoid a clash of civilizations and therefore stability is a bonus as well . If you include the importance of its geographical location as well as all of the natural wealth this place has every right to dictate its own terms on membership .

just on the point of new EU citizens rushing into other countries to find employment:
We've actually experienced that here in the UK with Poles. After joining, thousands of Poles arrived here, looking for work and free English lessons (fact: ALL EU citizens are entitled to free ESOL classes). The fact is, even the lowliest restaurant job was paying more than they could earn back home, thanks to minimum wage requirements. At least they can get legal work, rather than having to do dodgy, really poorly-paid stuff with no protection or rights. The pain was, from an FE college point of view, hundreds of Polish people swamping the classes and enrolling, than not turning up because they'd found jobs: this buggered up things for others, especially asylum seekers and genuine UK residents, as they couldn't get onto our courses in time.
However, things are slowly changing, as Poland's economy converges more with the EU's . I expect very much the same thing will happen when Turkey joins the EU: a sudden rush across the continent, followed by a gradual return.
Anyway, I expect every single wealthy German family will own a villa between Bodrum and Alanya by then anyway. Very Happy

Some times the road trip can be alot more interesting then where your trying to get to. This got be the case for Turkey.

In the last 12 or so years I've watch as it's taken some tought steps towards becoming a nicer place to live. Each step was taken to make the EU and the west in general like it more.

I don't know what the E.U will do or if Turkey will get in or not, but the road trip towards E.U will be alot of Fun. Wink

Whether Turkey makes it into the EU or not is not as important as the changes it should make to be a better place for the Turks to live and the rest of us to visit and live if we want to stay here. You have to admit, there are some things here that just down right suck. For example, the education system. To get a good education or go to postsecondary schools, you have to have money or be lucky. There are not many alternatives for young people.. or older people who might need a second chance. The Turkish people deserve better and I understand why they have such a poor outlook on life. They have had to deal with crap for the longest time. If they could make their own country a better place without joining the EU, it would give them a better sense of purpose and they could feel like they have really done something for their own future. Turkey needs to get up off its a** and do something for themselves instead of whining.. or worse, joining another bunch of whiners. Peace

Once i went to an SSK hospital in Bakırkoy ( coz i was working there).I started my JOURNEY with a piece of paper from my school and then the BAkırkoy SSK gave me 3 more papers and i spent 3 hours to get the papers and then was sent to Okmeydanı SSK hospital . There i was given 3 more apers and had to wait 3 hours to get 2 more papers . When i found out it ws my turn , the dentists had already gone. The other day i started my journey early in SSK Okmeydanı hospital and waited for a fiş( a card with a number showing when to see the doctor) 3 hours later the dentist sent me to Goztepe hospital which s bigger and had a surgeon. The other day i went there and waited 2 hours to get the 3 pieces of bloody papers and got another fiş and finally i managed to see the surgeon. She told me that i needed an operation and i asked her to send me Capa hospital where one of the ast professors was one of my friend. She sent me there and i went downstairs to an office to finish my JOURNEY but then i was told to go to another SSK hospital which was close and get the documents there . I went there and the guy gave me 3 more papers + asked me to bring 5 or 6 documents ( some from work and some from the SSK office in Bakırkoy) . That moment lost control and sweared to everyone working for SSk . i strted my Journey with a piece of paper and i at the last hospital i threw 3 folders of papers to the rubbish bin . there is not much paperwork in Turkey. Everything is totally paper work. but it was all my fault because i didnt phone doctor my relatives or students for torpil .
