Maybe if Jeff got another job with another school that agreed to pay his airfare then he should give the money back to the original school.
However if the school has tarnished his opinion of China so much that he is now getting out then he is just keeping the status quo.
I agree that the school will probably never pay for the airfare up front, but if I was a school I wouldnt anyway! Paying for an airfare up front has to be the most trusting / stupid thing in the world. I have only been in China for 9 months, in that time I have done 2 camps and worked at 1 school. In my opinion, only 2/3rds of the teachers I have met are actually good teachers as well as sane people.
From what I now know, if I was involved in hiring teachers I would never pay for the airfare before I had a long talk to the person AND saw them in the classroom AND got to know them.
Sometimes I guess these situations go so badly because of the attitude of the school. If a person calls you up and says:
Hi ___, look Im really sorry to call you like this, but there has been a major stuff up in the time table. I just realized, and called you strait away. It would really help me out if you could do these classes for me today. Sorry for the sort notice, how about I buy you dinner to make up for it?
Only a complete *beep* would say no to that. But:
You must teach these lessons in exactly 25 minutes. Hurry up
Of course you will say no!
Sometimes I think that when Chinese make mistakes they like to make everyone but themselves look like the bad guy which REALLY bugs me!!!! But sometimes I guess that they seem so rude and abrupt because their English so stupidly bad.
God only knows (only a saying) what the Chinese really think of us. I am inclined to think that there are about 1.3 billion different opinions of FTs in China. |

This is definetly how is should be, sadly though, it is not. |

You know something lots of change only comes about after a bit of agitation lets face it the our western education systems are partly the product of molotov throwing hippies from 68 Paris and the anti Vietnam marches if we had listened to all those finger wagers and tut tutters wed still be listening to Bing Cosby records.
I know this guy aint exactly Fidel Castro but shiit I like a rebel or two and there seems very few of them here!!! |

Hey Benno as big Morrissey fan I guess you should take a look at some of his lyrics _ lets take one of his Smiths songs heaven knows Im miserable now -
I was happy in the haze of a drunken hour
But heaven knows Im miserable now
I was looking for a job, and then I found a job
And heaven knows Im miserable now
In my life
Why do I give valuable time
To people who dont care if I live or die ?
Try going through the whole lyric kind of sums up why some people cant give an F**** any more.
Actually your probably right cowardice is just as good a way of summing up this sorry story but quite frankly it sometimes warms the cockles of my heart to hear that the system the chinese education system has suffered a small dent since its that same system that smashes massive chunks out of its millions of victims an I aint talking about us FTs.
By the way I grew up in the same country and generation as Morrissey if by any sorry state of affairs he ever became an FT here Im pretty certain I know where his sympathies would lie shiit he even defends shoplifters in one of his numbers!!! |

I am sure that people like Jeff will see a change in the system, and this is already apparent. The problem is that it is change that adversly impacts upon all of us, rather than change for our benefit.
How can Jeff's actions possibly be the spark that ignites a change that benefits foreign teachers? I mean the guy lied, ran away, and stole money, all from what appears to have been a pretty good employer!
It seems pretty clear to me that if we want change here in China then we need to lead by example and ensure that our own nose is kept clean. Think about our friend Jeff. He will never again be able to come to this board and complain about any future employers as he was the one who cast the first stone. If we all behaved like Jeff and followed his lead then we would all start out being more dishonest than the people we were trying to change. That doesn't make much sense.
It is my hope that Jeff will realize the errors of his ways and find a way to send the money back to the school. |
