I have to disagree! Twisted Evil I am encouraged by cwc's responses that he is most likely just a newbie, but I think Samantha is within her rights to challenge him because the world of ESL is filled with scammers. 'Sam' did her 'homework,' checking the references cwc has made. Obviously she is taking him seriously, and not just 'baiting.' While serious problems can be reported to the moderators, the community should let even subtle underhanded pro recruiters know that they are unwelcome. One of the reasons I stick with Dave's is because many other websites I see are filled with promotional fluff and misleading advertising. cwc may be a very helpful individual and I hope he can be forgiving, but I think Samantha is simply coming to the defence of a nice community here. I'm sure a Texan can appreciate that.
(recruiting is a legitimate practice but I think anyone who has researched ESL on the net knows what I'm talking about.)

I resent having my authenticity doubted. If one follows the instructions as given and searches for Colegio Americano Gipsy on google or yahoo, one will see a disparaging message on this site that is no longer in the archives. My only intent is to clean up the old baseless propaganda that is very visible. We all know that before considering a job one makes a routine check on these well-known search engines. Why all the hostility?

As CDaniels notes, there's a general hostility towards what seems like recruiting, as is known in Korean teaching cricles. I think that in a number of areas on Dave's forum, people have gotten to feel like it's a chat club, a place for friends...I'll admit that I feel the same way about the place. It's important to remember that this is a job information forum first and foremost, so what you're writing cwc is perfectly fine...publishing job info. I find it absolutely silly that anyone should get upset that a job is being offered in the forum...wouldn't you rather have the chance to discuss the job, openly, in front of your peers, rather than fish through the often shady and uninformative job ads posted elsewhere?

The flip side...yakking about such jobs and measuring their general worth here amongst the 'experts' should lead to more information, better information, and ultimately, the ability to weed out crap jobs and recruiters.

Samantha comes on strong...no doubt. She's done the same to me. But, it got us some answers on what you're all about cwc. Welcome to the forum! Wink

I have to say that I came close to reporting cwc, because I've had posts deleted in the past when they came too close to being recruiting. (I do consider this forum a recruiting tool by the way). But I didn't report it because I would have just been doing it to spite him, He's gotta fork over the $75 dollars just like everyone else! Not because I thought his posts were offensive. And that didn't seem like a valid reason... Rolling Eyes

Now we can move on to the real topic of this thread, advising where the good jobs are and who gets what kind of bonuses. Thank you Guy and MELEE for your unbiased opinions.

Well yes. If everyone came here actively recruiting (under any guise they thought they could get away with) we would have a heck of a mess on our hands here. Not that recruiting is a bad thing because it isn't, but Dave has a place for Job Ads. I believe he requires positions to be advertised there, on the Job Vacancy board but perhaps a moderator could clear this up for us.

Why not go there? What further would you like to say? I think you missed my point...

There is a lot of active recruiting going on. TEFL course providers do the majority of it. Just read through the other forums on Daves...

And to everyone out there, let's not get high on the horse shall we? I do recall the PM feature was a handy tool for a good number of people posting across several forums when they needed a teacher....sans $75.

BTW Dave's Cafe is working on a feature to give non-newbies a chance to network...something in the background so we can chit chat about exactly these issues.

I see that Guy is fair in his statements. He gave both sides of the argument. Pease stop all this useless bickering and discuss something worth reading. Samantha and the others should tell us about their housing, their classroom conditions or anything but whether they think it is okay to do what has already been done. How much does it cost to go out to dinner? Is public transportation good? Do the cabs overcharge you? How many students in your classes? How much do you pay the CFE? Are your house and school air-conditioned? Do you have an office? How much do you charge for private classes? How many private classes do you do in a week? Lets talk about the real issues. As veterans we have a responsibility to inform the people in colder climes.

So how did we all do this year?

My aguinaldo (sic) was a mighty two days' pay. This has to keep me going through the two and a half weeks my school is closed and Im on unpaid vacation.

Bah humbug.

I teach 25 hours per week. My normal take-home pay is $3,132.50 pesos + 525 pesos in vales per quincena, contracted for 12 months per year. On the last pay day before the holidays, Dec. 15th, I received a check for $21,321.88 pesos + 3,150 pesos in vales. Got paid regular pay plus vacation pay for the 2 weeks off for the holidays, and an aguinaldo of $13,031.20 pesos. I'm not sure how this compares with what teachers earn in other parts of the country.

Graham, it sounds as if the law is being violated there. Just out of curiousity, are you working only part time? That is the only instance I can think of where you wouldn't get paid vacation, but still, by law you should be getting your aguinaldo. Even part-time cleaning ladies get aguinaldo!

Tim, your school sounds like it is doing everything correct by the law. This is the kind of thing that makes a difference in retaining good staff. A happy teacher at vacation time is a happy teacher the rest of the year!

Samantha, I'm almost ashamed to say I work full-time - normally 35-40 classroom hours a week.

Teachers at my school received negligible 'Christmas bonuses' (the school is very careful not to call it an aguinaldo). The lowest received was 250 pesos. We get no vacation pay, no vales, and like I said in my previous post, my bonus was equivalent to only two days pay.

Yes, the school is breaking the law. Ive asked them to explain the situation, but have so far been told only that its "complicated".

Are other language schools paying up this year? or are many avoiding paying their dues?
