So let's face it, a private lesson means talking in your native tongue for one hour. How difficult can that be ?
Many Japanese are keen to learn English and for one reason or another choose to go privately. In my opinion, a suitable charge is somewhere around the 4000 per hour mark.
This rate is similar to what the student would be paying for tuition at any language school. |
You're really ignorant regarding this issue. A well planned out lesson is where the students do most of the speaking. In addition, I heard 40 minute one-on-one lessons are 11,000 yen.
Who are you to say what's suitable? Have you become the PricingGod? Joker. You really deserve this one: |

It's been said many times that teachers charge too much, too little, whatever. Personally I don't feel guilty charging 4000-5000 yen an hour for privates. If I felt I could get more than that I would. It's supply and demand capitalism plain and simple. It's not an essential service, so if students don't want the lessons, they don't have to take them.
and like a previous poster said, they pay upwards of 8000 yen an hour for the same private lesson at an eng. conversation school. |

| It really depends on the area you are in, and how the privates fit into your schedule. I used to have privates, at home and at a coffee shop, but my wife didn't like me teaching them at home (honne, tatamae thing). |
