It still puzzles me why some institutions favor the "white-skinned" backpacker over an experienced Asian teacher..

I guess I'm lucky.. I've been teaching in China for 5 straight years in a government university... I'm from an Asian country.. never did any runner whatever.. I've been a teacher in my country for 7 years.. never experienced any racial discrimination whatsoever in my workplace.. same salary, benefits as other FT's... i came through an international teaching organization recognized by the Ministry of Education and SBFE..

Sometimes the problem comes when one imposes or compares her home culture to another.. Cultural baggage can cause troubles to both employer and employee.. Bear in mind the stages of cultural adaptation and you're in for a ride in China.. Shocked

The OP said one person was fired for doing drugs with a student.
He wasn't set up by any chance, was he?
Were they smoking heroin or using syringes to shoot it?

He wasn't fired for doing drugs with a student. He actually stayed for the better part of a year and completed his contract. It wasn't until after he had left the school and left the country that the truth came to light.

This behaviour on the teachers part has left a lot of problems for this one student. And the same for any future teachers. Whenever the school recieves a job application the first thing they do is look at the picture and judge if they do any form of drugs. Then they ask me give them a telephone interview and again judge if they take any illegal substances. As a rule the school will no longer hire anybody under the age of 35.
