Interesting, National Plus schools generally pay $US, not Rupiah.
Why would they do that? Would it not be better, if one is going to live on the local economy, to be paid in the local currency .

Perhaps, but I was merely making an observation, ie, that Nat+ schools generally pay in $US thus my surprise to see your offer of salary in Rupiah. Most higher-paying employment (Teaching, Engineering, whatever) in Indon is in $US - that's just the way it is.

I asked the questions because I'm genuinely interested in the answer. Concerning your surprise, does the fact that it's a Christian school make a difference?

I'm not sure I follow you, but anyway, many of the Nat+ schools are Christian. I just Googled National Plus Bandung to see if I could find the one your're talking about, all I could find was Sekolah Mutiara which is a Christian school, wage in $US and included transport to church on Sundays.

Cheers,

Roughly half of National Plus school's pay in Rp and half of them pay in $US. It generally depends on what currency they charge the students in. Teachers generally prefer to be paid in $US because it's a stronger, more reliably currency. If you have a $US bank account, whether it be with a local (eg. BCA) or International (HSBC, ANZ etc.) then you can still withdraw from the ATM or teller in Rp. The rate is pretty reasonable. Provided you have a $US account some ATMS also allow you to withdraw in $US bills.

That's nice. You must be the greatest teacher in the world if the school is prepared to put everything on hold for you for a month Laughing

Just to confuse things still further, some Nat Plus schools - such as mine - will pay in USD on request but actually the value is pegged to a salary quoted in rupiah so a salary paid in USD varies with the TT exchange rate.

Going off at a tangent here, please also note that there are a variety of 'Christian' schools. Some require staff to be churchgoing practising christians of a particular denomination and are very religious indeed, others are run by christian (or any other religion) foundations but are open to students or staff of any background. It helps to know what kind of 'Christian' school you are applying to in order to avoid possible disappointment.

15 million with an apartment in bandung is great, especailly for a national plus school. ukrida university has a program like that and were paying 12 million plus 1 million for housing 2 years ago.
i have been offered positions at about 20 nationalplus schools and not a one offered me us dollars. did get offered a singapore dollar contract at a school in batam. most offered 8-12 million, with one or 2 in the 15 million range in jkt. i am well qualified and currently work at an international school. even at some international schools, the pay is less than 2000 us dollars........ japanese, sinagpore, singapore PSB, and ghandi to name a few. most of these schools dont offer housing or other benefits for local hires. I know some schools pay higher, JIS, BIS, etc and some national plus schools pay a good salary, such at peleta harapan, but from reading these posts u would think that all national plus and international schools are paying huge dollars and benefits. i am sure that some people have hit the big paydays, but i dont necessarily think that is the norm. not trying to flame or be flamed, just wanted to add some balance to this board.

The school is a Presbyterian-run school but they do not require faculty to specifically be Presbyterian.

I don't understand the reason for your obvious sarcasm.

I stand corrected. Just that in all my research so far I've only come across schools paying in $US. Shows you the extent of my 'research' Embarassed

Chancellor - looks like a nice school. All the best and hope it works out well.

We'll see. I must admit that I think I'd be more comfortable teaching adults.

I've taught adults, now I teach children. Both have their challenges. Adults tend to get argumentative, especially about grammar, but can clam up when asked to speak. Children, on the other hand, generally absorb everything you teach them, don't argue or think they know more than you do, and either never shut up or never say boo.

I am envious of your position that you can simply try out schools and choose your preference. That must be nice (but rare I think).

I used to remember when everyone wanted to do the 'serious' stuff, teaching adults with emphasis on Business English, In-Company Training, IELTS prep etc etc. I must say after several years of that I'd much rather be in a classroom with a crazy bunch of cool kids having a laugh and getting paid for it.

I suspect that this particular opportunity is indeed rare. Who knows? Maybe after it's over they'll decide they would rather have someone else.
