I have just received an email from a friend who has just been fired in Qatar. The reason? A Qatari colleague put up a notice(in Arabic) protesting about the cartoons on her office door. my friend doesn't speak Arabic and asked for the notices to be removed... so she was fired because she was obviously supporting the cartoons
I am thinking of copying and pasting her (4 page) email of the ins and outs of the incident, to show how crazy this situation has got. I am awaiting her permission to do so.

That's absurd, but horribly believable. I repeat what I said much earlier in this thread: it's a reminder how precarious employment can be in this region. It's not often we get examples as dramatic or as widely publicized as we've had on this issue, but it's only fair to acknowledge that it happens a lot more here than it would in, say, Europe or the USA.
