EVery EU nation is different, but it's usually safe to say that if your parents are EU passport holders, then you are eligible, as well. Some nations will extend that to grandparents, depending on how badly they need the numbers! You can hold both EU and American passports, though I believe the US makes you swear loyalty to them above all other nations (no lie).
When I worked in Spain, my EU colleagues earned the same as I did, and almost all of them were illegal hires, like myself. It saves the academy money. However, now more schools/academies prefer and/or require EU passport holders. They might not make more per hour than their illegal peers, but they pay taxes, receive national health care, and set themselves up for a pension. Life with legit working papers in Spain is a bit easier. You'll also be considered for better jobs that the illegals won't be eligible for. There are lots of cowboy operations in Spain, so if you can get the passport, then it's worth the time.
