| In his most recent post, "nanchang" writes more than 2,000 words to justify his paranoia and his bad decisions. How pathetic is that? He is one FT that China is luck to be rid of forever. |

Look nanchang, no-one has attacked you, or disputed what you've said.
{emphasis mine} |
We could quibble about attack, but every post by you, Malso, Henry, 7969, and everyone execept HFG has disputed what I said. And many were filled with macho non-sense about not hacking things. I've hacked a lot in a lot of places. If I don't like it, I find somewhere I like. Keep your low expectations to yourself.
I DID MY CONTRACT, I LEFT, AND NOW I AM TELLING OTHERS OF MY EXPERIENCE. THE ONLY HONEST THING ANY OF YOU COULD HAVE SAID IS "I DON'T AGREE." But instead you tell how we should pity the poor Chinese and how you were abused so everyone should be.
Best of luck |
Perhaps I should have said, no one has disputed the veracity of what you said. No one has accused you of lying. I never said that your claims weren't true.
You're obviously on the defense. You're not even making any attempt to see things from the other side. I started off with some simple suggestions, and even tried to give you the benefit of the doubt, but you chose to interpret my response as an attack against you. It was only after your overtly defensive responses that anyone started seriously taking an issue. Mostly with your attitude.
No one said a word about pitying the Chinese. This forum in general, is not known for its overwhelmingly pro-China sentiment, you might have noticed. Schools have been torn to shreds on Dave's, so why isn't the place jumping on the bandwagon here, and patting you on the back for exposing such an awful institution?
You were working at a public institution and it didn't live up to your expectations, end of story. People pointed out that maybe you expected a bit too much from them, and you got angry with that. There are a few ligitimate gripes in there, but they've been completely lost among all the trivial things about the internet speed and power outages. No one was suggesting you should stay somewhere you hate, but I don't think your grievances are enough to bash the school. You yourself say that there are FTs coming back for another term, and whatever their reasons, THEY must have found the conditions bearable, or they wouldn't be there. |

7969's reply to my OP:
8. i hate slow internet as well, and i had no computer at my last school. i had my own laptop tho. they do say they'll provide a computer usually but as to its quality, thats anyones guess.
* Who would for a school without a computer in China? It's virtually unheard of. You ike to settle, I like to succeed. |
read the quote above one more time and try to answer your own question on the 4th line.
hmmm.... well nanchang, i wont bother rebutting any of your other points made up above, because in subsequent rebuttals, you've obviously not read what some other people wrote or you only read what you wanted to read. while my experience at my last school wasnt the best, it wasnt the worst either. but i will second, third and fourth what other posters have said. you obviously expected things in nanchang, at work and elsewhere, to be of developed country status while living in a developing country (in jiangxi no less). if you want first world standards/service/accommodation then you ought to have gone elsewhere. but things go pear-shaped everywhere from time to time, just happens a bit more often in a place like china. have you been to russia or any other former soviet republics by any chance? some stories i have from there make china look a bit like paradise
two years ago, i worked with a teacher who complained to the school about everything. it was their "right to have this", and their "right to have that" and whenever we met thats all that was ever talked about. frankly, myself and the other foreign teacher got tired of it quickly. this person may have been right in claiming they were owed all of these things according to the contract, but we all know how it works here (this is where some knowledge of chinese culture/working practices/psychology comes in). this former teacher-colleague of mine obviously didnt weigh the cost/benefit of trying to get certain things, certainly didnt know how to compromise and in the end probably came out worse than had they complained a little less, and/or chose their battles a little more wisely instead of running off to the foreign affairs office in town as a kneejerk reaction. noone at the school liked this teacher and all of us were glad to see their back on the way out. this is the kind of individual who wont make it in china. nanchang, anyone who comes here and hasnt got enough patience/flexibility to survive the minor inconveniences you were faced with should just pack up and leave. as henry said, china is better off without you and maybe you're better off somewhere else.

Malsol, my OP was about the school I worked for which you know nothing about. I said NOTHING to begin with about Nanchang until you brought it up (and up again and again)........
I speak and read Chinese WELL. AAANNNDDDD, I left! Ok? I went, honored my one year contract, and I LEFT. What don't you understand about that? It is your lack of respect for your fellow posters that has brought the discussion down.[/b] |
now there's the pot calling the kettle black. some posters here related experiences that didnt support what you've written, and in the rude fashion sometimes found on these forums, you tell them THEY'RE wrong....

| China is a crap country to live in. I only came because I have a decade plus long interest in the ancient culture. I speak and read the language. I loved my time in Taiwan. |
i spent six months in taiwan. while some things are better there than in china, many things are the same. you've obviously got a lot to learn......

I opened this account in order to post about Nanchang and am now abandoning it. I had no need for this sort of thing before and hope not to again.
Also, GDP has nothing to do with it. Go back and read books by Western travelers to the Orient from 100 or 200 years ago. Almost all are impressed with the Japanese and almost all have little nice to say about the Chinese.
Researching a school is not a guarantee.
Your other comments were equally gratuitous. I've talked with plenty of other FTs, including before I came. My observations are no less valid than yours.
Someone thought the email given here is my regular email address. Yeah, right.

Until the Japanese destroyed the Russian Navy, and then later bombed Pearl Harbour... some people weren't so happy with their progressive, developing ways then.
I think market-oriented people around the world are very impressed with the way China has (finally) decided to develop... (I won't point this in the direction of other threads... too much) ... if not a little intimidated, so maybe things could go the same way...
It's not quite how you are saying. You put a comment forward based on your experience. If others feel they can support it, refute it, or even give an alternate view of why you might have experienced what you say you did... then isn't that the nature of the Message Board beast?
Not everyone has to agree with you, or me, do they?
But, good luck in your future endeavours outside of mainland China.

Nanchang, or should I call you Ishmael?
Dude, lighten up. Do you even read the posts before you begin throwing hissy fits? I am on your side. My point in mentioning the internet cafes was a point of reference. If there is one nearby, your locale does have access. That's one less lie for your FAO to tell you.
I believe that every FT should have an ADSL connection or better, bypassing the institutional LAN.
Try to identify your friends to avoid pissing on them. |

Chong: Oh, that's were I am, I'm lost man. Its that stuff man, I wasn't sure if I was in Nanchang's dream man, being in his quotation is bad enough. I'm getting paranoid in here man, his quotations are a bad trip man.

Chong: You mean we want to tell everyone that we're happy man... here being part of the drug research team at Jiangxi University of Traditional Chinese Medicine.
Cheech: Ya man, that's it man, we're doing research, which means ......... we are here to see if you can get high on some of these drugs, uh or use them for aphrodisiacs.... or can help you speak English... and so on.
Chong: Ya man the list goes on and on! But whao man!! Your English vocabulary is really far out! It must be the aphros man...I can do them all day!
Cheech: Ya man, I've been putting them in the food in the cafeteria man, to see like.....if students start doing it and so on. Then we can smuggle condoms man!
Chong: Whao, Far Out! But I think they sell condoms here already man, you'd better be careful, maybe using them for learning English is better for you man. Like lets get out of this quotation man, I feel like I want to complain too much in here man.
Cheech: I hear ya man. He needs to do more aphros man...."
|
Chong: Ahhhh! Fresh air man, glad we're out of that quotation man, now lets try all these ginsings and see if they are aphrodisiacs or Englucinogenics.
Cheech: Ya man, thats a far out word man, and aphros too..lets see if there are any for......for...
Chong: For speaking English, man!

| I think it's terrible to have the teachers living on a pig farm with no busses out to the city. And all the other things. It's the lies that really get to you. I too, plan on leaving the country. can't take it anymore. I'm living with a Russian roommate on a college campus in Changsha where they beat the dogs to death in sight of all of us. They say it's ok because it's their regulation. |
