Can I borrow $200? |

In Guangxi, it's no problem getting a z visa and residency permit after ariving on an F or L visa, depending on how well-connected your school is, or whether they are willing to 'pay a little extra'. As with most regulations in China, you can pay your way past a lot of red tape.
I came on an L, and it was no problem. I got a brand new streamlined residency certificate, had to attend a big ceremony at the local party compound (and was on local tv and in the newspaper) despite the fact that technically I barely qualified for it and my school had to 'pay a little extra' to get it for me in time. Welcome to China!
Still, you're taking a risk, and it can make for a nervous first month as your visa's expiry date looms near. |

Good post above, Russell...........too bad that we cannot count on those "schools' connections" prior to our arrivals though
By the way Russell, that "residency certificate" sounds rather strange to me, and forgive me please...... but you make it sound like you've got some kind of extra or shall I say "special" document there....as far as I know residency is a STICKER to our passports as a valid official document
Now, are you talking about your RESIDENCY STICKER in your passport that you've got?
MY "L" (obtained in China) was converted in Guanxi more than a year ago and the same way as Russell's, although I kept a "low profile" and without any advertising or special events' attendance then
Cheers and beers |

To be honest, I was told it was special but I'm not sure why. Nope, it's not a sticker. It is a seperate little card designed to make it easier for foriegn experts and businessmen live in Guangxi. It automatically grants me the right to buy/rent property, get a driver's license, send me kids to school here (LOL) and so on. It expires after 2 years. I don't know if this differs greatly from the regular residency permit you're refering to as I am a China Newbie...I got it in October.
The event itself was pretty funny. Pretty girls in Shanghai dresses handing out residency permits and student visas on stage surrounded by dour looking People's Party People (Heaven to Chinese person must look like a non-stop variety show.) |

Russell, that residency you've got is rather interesting. Then, those "pretty girls" at that event there must've been as interesting too
Anyway, I am in Guanxi (Nanning) too.
