Give me the facts: How long has Mr. Buckland been in business? How many people has he brought to China? How many of his recruits have blacklisted him?

In the meantime, take a peak at a letter from him, and compare these two stories.

Dear Mr. Scott,

My name is Owen Buckland, the president of Buckland International Education group in China. David Papier worked for me for 6 months, and you were right: He is the best ESL teacher I have seen in my life! It's a great job you've done for us. Why do I say you did a great job? Because 90% of ESL teachers have a big problem in China with the big classes. Usually, China has an average class size of 50 students, so the foreign teachers are so shocked when they are facing 50 students in one class. David Papier was very professional in handling the big class problem in our school, and you are so kind to share his experience with other teachers. This will help all the other teachers who have the same problem. Your articles are wonderful!!

The letter could be Buckland basking in someone else's sunshine.

It sure looked like an attempt to get some "recognition" from the
ESL MiniConference Online website readers. The original interview
mentions nothing about Buckland, nor does it seem that Buckland
had much to do with the success of that particular teacher since
he had a long history of teaching. So a letter from Buckland
praising the teacher on his skills after the interview seems like
an effort to get some free publicity.

But, maybe I'm just too cynical.

The other two letters don't sound like much, either. One from
a teacher happy teaching for peanuts in a tiny school and another
from someone who dropped him like a hot potato after getting
jerked around on school locations after signing a contract.

I also checked his website and if he offers what he says, it
seems like a fair enough deal. I think the pay is a bit low,
but, altogether, not much different than I would expect from
a recruiter. The accomodations generally look nice. I wonder
if they are really able to give everyone the private apartments
they claim. It seems that this could be a problem (from my
experience).

I don't think we'll ever know the whole story and we'll also
never know how many teachers have "blacklisted" him
(wherever and however they do this).

If there is a blacklist somewhere, I'd sure like to read it.

Anyway, I think some good info is coming out on this, so
I feel better informed.

I am not at liberty to divulge my source right now but I am reliably informed that in a recent study of ESL teacher recruiting agencies in China, Buckland was the largest but had the fewest legitimate complaints. It was also noted that complaints against Buckland went down the longer he was in business which was contrary to the trend in the other agencies where complaints seemed to increase the longer they were in business.

Were I desparate for a job I would not hesitate to call Owen.

OWEN:

Two suggestions friend.

Ask your testimonial writers for permission to also include their email address so prospective applicants can communicate with them and remove any doubt that they are real people and they actually wrote those letters.

The contract breach clause is inadequate. 500 rmb penalty for you to tell the new recruit to take a hike? This should be 10,000 rmb.

If you have any real questions concerning Owen just PM me.
I'd rather not throw me email up for all. If you PM me I can answer. I can even give you an email then.
