If the OP is still around - if you haven't gathered already, you're safer in the company of Turks ... run if you see any foreigners ... even faster if they look like a TEFLer ...

Isn't that what I have always said about TEFLers?

Look at the OP's signature to understand her.

Run??? What are you nuts??? That takes all the fun out of it. Razz However, I do make a point of avoiding people with permanently sour looks on their faces so that means I will be staying out of the way of at least one particular TEFLer from this forum... Wink

Were you walking down to the:

a. supermarket/grocer's/corner shop?
b. market-in that case you mean a street market such as salıpazarı?

I think that you have been reduced to calling your grocer's a "market."

Well where I'm from a 'market' is where you buy fresh veggies and fruit and fish and all kinds of niceness! The open air 'market' in Sivas was just that -- lots of nice fresh blood from freshly slaughtered cows and sheep... fresh fish roasting on an open flame... foul smelling homemade cheese soaking in brine... grape leaves just waiting to be rolled... and of course many Kangals munching on discarded bones by the garbage bins. Mmm. Very hygenic. I don't know if you refer to such a place as the grocer. Cultural differences I suppose.
