Words in guest book at Ataturk's home will cost citizen 10 thousand YTL

Turkish citizen Fethi Dorcuncu has been found guilty of insulting Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan with words he wrote in the guest book kept open for visitors to write in at the Thessaloniki birth home of Ataturk.

Ankara's 25th Court of Justice ordered Dorduncu to pay a fine of 10 thousand YTL for "insulting Erdogan before society, and making serious infractions in terms of personal insults, as well as provoking hatred and emity in the society at large."

My list of Turkishness- (a rant in disguise!)

Sitting on a city bus, middle of suffocating summer, a middle-aged woman in overcoat and headscarf gets on, sits next to me and tells me to close the window. ( a breeze is unhealthy)

Standing in line at the bank, the man behind me suddenly decides to stand at my right elbow as if it will make things go faster. Even had this happen at an ATM, F.F.S!

Walking down a sidewalk, a group of three people are coming in the opposite direction, shoulder to shoulder. Not one of them are willing to make room for me to pass. But this falls into the general category of Turks being unable to walk in any sort of particular direction in public places.)

Graffiti scratches into the back of a bus seat. Nothing pornographic. Only a sad, lonely and silent "Hurrah" for their favourite team.

Walking into a shop. And they ask you if you have change. They have to leave the shop to get change and come back with ONLY the change for your purchase. Expecting it somehow never ever to happen again.

Despite all these peevish remarks, I wouldn't live anywhere else.

Does this happen to any of you who are married to Turks?

Husband or wife's sister, brother, cousin rings up because (s)he is going to buy something they don't really need like the latest mobile phone or a running machine. They have found a place that will accept a bonus card or a world card or something and gives a discount or lets you pay back in 26 installments. They of course have maxed all 13 of their credit/store cards so they have decided to use yours. Next day partner has to cancel all plans travel to the shop and use your card. Of course every month you have to cancel your plans and get the installment from them and partner often forgives them the money or tells them to buy a birthday present for someone instead. No shame involved at all.

Never mind thrifty. When the wife has to travel halfway across Istanbul to use her card for a relative it gives you a good excuse to go down the beer shop.
Just out of interest who do the relatives phone when you are out the country?

They call and text and on one occasion actually asked for a loan for a running machine and we were supposed to send the money by transfer. I refused.

No it is on the basis that the wife's sister who has 2 young kids and her husband who has a degree in civl engineering form YTU and a Master's from Bosphorous but doesn't have any money because his business went bust and then he had another job but he couldn't get paid because the council wouldn't give planning permission for the houses as the developer had built them first on plans that the wife's sister had drawn but with no planning permission.

To cut a long story short he then with no money decided to restart his business and has no money because he is spending out money on salaries and equipment. Meantime the wife's sister has put on a lot of weight because of the kids, they live in Mec and he brings back loads of cakes and stuff every evening. She cannot get exercise because there is no place to do it in Mec and because of the kids. So she needed a running machine and if you are going to buy a running machine you might as well get a good one.

OK?
