I would like to say a few things about Aston, having worked there for some time.
It has some good points - they are not likely to screw you over and lie to you. At least I haven't had that experience and don't know anyone who has.
It's good for your social life - you can meet heaps of people from all around the english speaking world here on a working holiday. Good way to meet educated young Chinese people with good english too - the co-workers I mean.
The bad points I would say are headed by the fact that the salary is at the lower end of the scale compared to most other schools, other than universities. Also, over the past 4 years there has been no increase to pay rates, despite inflation in China of over 10% per annum. Experienced teachers are offered exactly the same wages as people first arriving in China who've never taught before. It's been in my experience and friends have confirmed that they are simply unwilling to negotiate, at least when you first come there. After a semester or more it may be possible, depending on individual branches and your situation there. Another thing to consider is that the bonus is paid in US dollars, which is continuing to decline in value against the RMB. Not a problem for Americans of course, but other teachers have little use for US cash.
Finally, Aston requires specific paperwork on lesson planning and assessment for each class. However on the plus side it is part western-run, the management are reasonable and do understand westerners and do their best to satisfy us within the confines of company policy. |
