Ah, William if you are considering moving back home then getting a nice apartment near a university with lots of Asian business students and teaching business English along with essay writing should fill your pockets okay.
Best of luck |

haha
how DARE they take advantage of the market right?
More and more people choose to go abroad to teach English... Even ones with (gasp) university degrees!!!
raise the standards and lower the wages and see what the people will do.
If they couldnt get away with it they would not try. |

Recently I met am Australian man who worked at a school connected to an Australian university...the school here required him to work a 40 hour week and wear a suit..paid him 8K but took back 2K for living expenses...he complained of only having 6k per month and summed it up with this thought..Beijing girls I meet expect me to have money..every month I am broke one week after payday...
now this may seem extravagant but in Beijing 6K is not hard to spend...if your not making 16 to 26 k .. it may not be the place to go.... |

| Most Chinese people I meet earn at least 30 or 40 thousand RMB a month. They all wonder how anyone can survive on anything less. I went into HSBC the other day to try to open an account but my salary of 9,500 RMB a month is below the minimum required (the bottom income bracket was 10,000 - 12,500). I was taken out to go bowling, have a meal, and knock back some beers a few nights ago and my host spent more than 3,000 RMB in a single night. |

Dear Bill,
Sure those ex-pats do make a pretty penny(not the immigration folks at embassies), but almost all ESL teachers never even know of this lifestyle, let alone are banned from it by a low income level. I enjoyed it for a few years, when I was the precious examiner(dime a dozen now). Sucking on Habana cigars, and dumping a shameful amount at the bars. One weekend a fellow Examiner and I shelled out 4,000 or more for a Saturday night in Tianjin, and Sunday night in Beijing. We always stayed in 5 star hotels(In the end ,went down to 4 stars) and the prices for a draught beer was pricey-In Xi'an in 2002-3 ? I paid 38 RMB for a half pint of Carlsburg.
But, that was a freak occurrence, and it'll never be back. What I'm talking about is the basic ESL salaries are slipping. Airfares are usually capped now, as is the medical, and taxis...? That all used to be 100% paid. Montessori,Wall Street, and Concorde have all lowered their salaries from the high of 1998-2000. The one good thing is that the cheating and shiftiness hasn't disappeared ! |
