Students generally don't need to know older spellings. Of course you could highlight them as needed, though, depending on what your students are reading (old English? It rarely comes up in my classes!). And, um, future changes?!? How are we to predict such things?

Anyway, I believe this thread was about teachers' knowledge of correct spellings, not necessarily about what we should teach. (Of course, it does follow that if we can't spell correctly then we can't teach correct spelling.)

I didn't mean any offense. Maybe "ridiculous" was a bit harsh. My apologies. I just don't like being called superficial! Trust me... if anything, I think too much.
