I think she has the best voice out of the j-pop artists I've seen. She also sings numbers that are more jazzy, geting away from the typical jpop stuff.
Ali, SMAP is everywhere, though I'm not fully sold on their singing ability but rather their marketing and PR skills. A long way to come from being back up singers on roller skates. |

I second the motion. Also, MAX is I think a really quintessential jpop girl group. And obviously Ayu's "A Song for XX." Something by Utada Hikaru, like maybe First Love. Without having been to Japan, let alone when these songs first came out, it's hard to speak of their iconic status, but I think these songs/artists are all quite popular and fairly good representations of the jpop sound, without delving too much into my own personal tastes and opinions.
I can't really speak for pop groups with male vocalists, but I think Gackt's Vanilla is pretty classic, although its sound is more ska than anything else. Viva la Revolution by Dragon Ash. |
