| VS is correct, some exchanges give better rates than others but the effort of driving to gain a few pennies isn't enticing. Certain banks will send one transfer 'free of charge' if you bank with them and you are sending over a minimum amount. |

| My friend at work who just bought an Altima said it is a five year plan. It's cheap because it is the 2.5 litre rather than the 3.5 litre engine and the deal is apparently financed through the dealer with below market interest rates. Either way it sounds like a good and easy way to get started. Buying new from the dealer is usually the fasted way to get on the road. Just go in with a salary letter, a license and a visa and you'll have the car the next day. |

| Next day delivery depends on the make and model. You probably won't be able to get a Toyota the next day. For popular models such as the Yaris you may have to wait several weeks. |

| Should we buy a car? It seems like it will be impossible to get along without one unless we take taxi's everywhere. |
As said earlier --- rent for a month. Lots of agencies to pick from. Agencies from Fujairah seem to have best rent. Yes, it's a bit more expensive than owning. However, you'll have the benefit of taking your time to find a good deal when buying a car. Take a month or two to look around --- read the "For sale" lists on your campus, and at the grocery store. You'll get a better deal when you don't feel pressured to buy, right away. It will more than make up for the lease costs.
Exchange rates ---- different exchange companies have different currency buy/sell spreads. I'm most familiar with USD --- and have found that UAE Exchange has the lowest spread for the USD. Look around a bit.
My office-mate just found out that his bank has a crappy exchange rate when they wire funds to the US. He's losing about $25/month. It pays to look around. |

What about high-end vehicles - BMW, Mercedes, Porche?
How much to lease / buy - affordable in the UAE.
I'd like to roll in style with bling on my wheels if I'm there. |

I'd say 400 dirhams/day will get your a BMW 318 or 325 and a lower end Merc. There are companies that rent higher end models for much, much more. Prestige Car Rentals will loan you a sporty car for around 1750 dirhams/day. Chump change if you landed a contract with HCT, right?

| I believe Prof's wife is here with HCT - you don't get a furnished apartment. You may be supplied with white goods but not anything else |
