Someone told me the Chinese do not have sweat glands as we do, and it does seem that there is a lot less bodily air pollution in China.

However, in some colleges I worked I could smell the students. It was mostly during winter, when they had to take cold showers in cold weather.

Here in the clean air city of Kunming, my nose works very well and I am delighted by the cleanliness and pleasant fragrance of the people. I often read over the shoulder of my uni students and have never detected a bad smell. To the contrary, their freshly washed hair and clean clothes make standing next to them VERY plesant! Even in crowded busses on rainy days, the scrupliously clean Chinese are not smelly.

If you've never detected a bad smell in China then you must have some pretty good dope there in Yunan or you're just insane.

It's Yunnan, not Yunan and I said the people don't smell bad. There are plenty of bad smells here same as there must be where you are!

White John, watch your racist comments on indigenous Australians, please. They cop enough flack already, they don't need more crap from you. In my outback experience, EVERYONE who lives out there stinks. Its so hot your deorderant doesn't work anymore. Probably people could smell YOU coming TOO.

I think I've found a job for myself in Nanjing. A gazillion laowai can't be wrong...

Asynca,
I worked amongst the Abbos for many years and they deserve all the flack they get. They are the most worthless bunch I have encountered anywhere on earth. One Chinese garbage picker is worth any 5 Aboriginals...so there! Rasist, no... experienced, yes!
No one stinks unless they don't wash or let the clothes rot off their backs because they go to town and spend their dole money on grog.

You speak an appalling language, whitjohn! And, you display an appalling redneckish attitude! Are there more such racists in OZ as you? How can you talk about your own fellow countrypeople in such a derogatory manner??? Are you a Chinese immigrant?

We were live-in partners in then Salisbury, now Harare - two Israelis, two Aussies, two Brits and me; sad to say one of the two Aussies had the smjelliest feet I have ever smelled in my life.
But I would never presume he was statistically relevant.

Maybe if the Aboriginals had better dope to sell you, operated an insane asylum or cleaned up your trash like a garbage picker then they would have a greater worth to you. 20~30 well scrubbed fine smelling students can cover up your body odor in the classroom, what drugs do your students get for you to cover up your insanity?

Let me just assure you that, no, not all Australians are like Whitjohn.

Most of us the decency to to treat each other with respect. I find it is usually people with bad self esteem and identity issues who feel it necessary to be racist, sexist, homophobic etc, and then try to justify their gross generalizations with 'experience' or 'real truth'.

Back on the air pollution topic though (what, on topic?!) It turns out that people generally say that inland is bad, coastal is good. Tianjian, Dalian and cities in the Fujian provinces are apparently good. EVERYONE tells me no Sichuanese cities, stay AWAY! Thanks ppl Smile

Shenyang (and probably most Chinese cities) is heated with brown coal. Until they turn the furnaces off at the end of March, the smell is everywhere. Other than that, not too bad.

Hi,
I am originally from Adelaide also. I am teaching in Jiangsu Province and it is VERY industrial here. The School is opposite a CHEMICAL PLANT which I think manufactures fertliser and most mornings you cannot see even a few feet ahead. There is a constant white dust in the air continually and it gets into everything. It is in your hair, on your desk, on your floor etc. I was (and am still ) a bit concerned as I had a lung removed 14 years ago and cannot afford to play around with my remaining lung. I just hope that the white dust (as well as the dust from the chalk) will not cause any problems. This Province and area has to be one of the worst for pollution. There are no birds here at all - they have all kicked the bucket no doubt.

Rhonda, the white powder doesn't sound good but it may be harmless. The lack of birds on the other hand....

Taken out of context, this can have a very different meaning in China.
