Here's a concrete example -- 6 hours teaching a week, plus tutorial time, at a university in Barcelona, who were looking for a native speaking English teacher last week: 400 euros a month, I assume before tax.

Outside universities, in language schools, many teachers are currently finding (at least in Barcelona) that they're not making much more than about 1,200 euros a month for around 20-24 hours contact (class) time.

Without doing some (often much better paid) private tuition as a supplement, they wouldn't survive...

...great example SirKirby...that's typical in L.America as well. and MissMumkin, you're right as well. the MA doesn't hold as much value in British schools in Spain. but, not all schools are British in Spain Smile what if you speak to an American director at a Spain school? his eyes would water over like a thirsty dog, when he saw the M.A. of course, you'd have to throw on a 6 week TEFL certificate, and they could loop holes.

im not sure why these Spanish, L.American universities don't value ESL. i think because it's just a requirement, not anything any student really wants to do.

also, i think most upper class top 10% families send their kids abroad...Belgium, France, etc where they come back speaking English as if they went to the FBI Training School of Languages.
