It seems there was no intention to offend Islamic sensibilities or defame the honour and name of the prophet Mohammed.
It was the children who named the bear! |

Does anyone seriously think this is all about religious naivity ? Surely, it's all political. The UK has political issues with Sudan. I think this is just telling UK politicians "Don't fack with us !", however absurd it all is.

| Yes Sudan has issues with Britain having been a colony. One of the funniest t-shirts I've ever seen was being worn by an aid worker I saw there. It said " VSO - The Empire Strikes Back!" |

Bottom line is this. One Brit makes a naive mistake and is punished very harshly. Two Brits leave their children unattended and become international celebrities.
We live in a crazy world. |

When I was 6 my Mum bought me a gollywog and called I called it Bertie. That didn't insult any religious group. Infact she saved up the labels off a Company's jar of marmalade and I got a free metal golliwog badge.

Infact back in those days no one ever took offense and if my memory serves me correctly didn't Agatha Christie write a novel entitled 'Ten little *beep*'? |

| Stupid injustices happen everywhere. Brits and Americans would do well to look at what goes on at home. All the noise is because it's MUSLIMS. A teacher gets a short sentence for something daft, world outcry - Israeli soldiers shoot a TV journalist dead and say "Do we care?" not a sound. |

Gollywogs. How very British. Perhaps that's what the Sudanese resent... the British types who still think "the wogs begin at Calais". |

Over a teddy bear. The Danish cartoon uproar was one thing, but this is ridiculous now. |

That's pretty disturbing.
I think in a time like today when there are very real issues going on - ones that do merit some sort of response (in the form of debate or something, as opposed to lashes or executions) - so many people would take this one to such an extreme level. It's hard to see how it helps any cause for so many people to react like this.
*edit* in case it's not clear, I am in fact referring to the calls for execution and protests as disturbing...the fact that I don't think a whole "culture" (ie "these countries" generally or however it is phrased) should be judged by an extreme event doesn't mean I am wholly lacking any sense.

I think she should receive 40 lashes.
Having said that I think we should think twice where we are willing to live and work. I always wonder what teachers talk about in their classes in these muslim countries. Family? Shopping? Weather? |

| Just so it gets said, I have worked with a large number of Muslim students who talk about whatever. Not in Sudan obviously. |

For people who think this isn't a real problem, there are now calls for her execution.

| KHARTOUM, Sudan - Thousands of Sudanese, many armed with clubs and knives, rallied Friday in a central square and demanded the execution of a British teacher convicted of insulting Islam for allowing her students to name a teddy bear "Muhammad."... |
