How well I understand all of you who can't go home for the holidays and whose family are too cheap or too lazy or too hide bound to visit you. I spent 10 yrs out of my home country Canada. In Mexico some friends came to visit 1 of my 4 brothers came. My sister said who would want to go there when I offered to meet her and mom at a resort that I sure couldn't afford but would for their sake. They wouldn't have come to visit the lovely house a Mexican friend gave me for a yr rent free. Too strange for them.
Ofcourse my mom through my sister told me "mom wants you to come home for Christmas this year" did mom pay no. But one brother came up with frequent flyer points so I did get home.
The point is if your friends and family have a bit of money they can visit. Now I don't want to spend Christmas with them and I am home for a year. My many many friends in other countries who I have spent much time and many holidays with are closer and more fun anyhow than my family. |

Amen Ruffle!!
I know exactly what you're saying. I'm closer to some of my students than I am my own family. Many people give families and friends excuses but I have to admit, you hit the nail on the head. I personally give no excuses to people who put forth NO EFFORT to even call or email me on a regular basis.
My family has a little money but they woule NEVER even think about coming to Texas for a visit so I don't go to see them anymore. Where are you going after your year in Canada? |

Wow.. lots of anger toward family here. I can understand, I spent almost 25 years hating most of my fam ... er biological relatives... now I just think they are sad... Cant choose your biological relatives but you can choose your friends... tho you can have the same kinds of fights with them too!
Anyway, a former student told me about Zipolite in Oaxaca, specifically a hostal called Shambala... now Im not the hippe type but this place seems kinda cool. So I think I will go there unless my cat needs to have surgery (got a growth on his tongue and so far antibiotics dont seem to be having as much effect as I would like). |

Shambala is really nice, if delacosta weren't so busy in India, he could tell you more about it.
However, I'm not a big Zipolite fan. It's the riptide. If I go to the beach, it's because I want to spend a significant amount of time actually IN the sea. I don't fancy doing that in a place where swimmers die every year. Mazunte just down the way has much nicer water, enough waves to make it interesting, (only problem is they break really close to shore) but safe for non-experts. Also San Augustinillo which is between Zipolite and Mazunte is really nice. |

| I spent several days, maybe a week, at Zipolite. Yes, it's still a haven for hippies, pot heads, and nudists. Yes, not only is the riptide bad, but if you swim too close to the point, the rocks will tear you to pieces. Most of the coast of Chiapas has undertows that try to take you to Asia. |
